Anyone else put Adventureland in their top ten lists of 2009?

I know that a lot of people were big fans, so was very curious to see if that stuck until the end of the year. Made my personal list, alongside Goodbye Solo and Up. Wrote a full article about it if you’re interested.

…they make you root for the bullying a-hole?

Those stocky guys who realised they were being stitched up by the Knock-Off-The Hat game were obviously written as generic goons. But I cheered when they punched that cocky bespectacled nerd guy because of his backtalk. It irritated me when Michael Cera…oops I meant Jesse Eisenberg got in a punch because, in essence, the jocks were right to be angry that they were being swindled. The nerd gave them lip, he deserves to be hurt…simple as.

I suppose I should stop watching these movies where the skinny, streak-o’-piss, stoner "hero" gets his way.

Cos there’s nothing I love more than to see those whining pussies get shut up by "Villainous generic jocks".

In a world that despises bullying, these movies provoke a contrary opinion.

    This was a FANTASTIC movie.

That’s all I wanted to say. I’m just really disappointed with the IMDB rating.

I love to recommend this film to my friends. In fact I’ve secretly hidden it away in my girlfriend’s travel bags so she’ll discover it when she gets home. I want everyone ti discover it.

    Enjoy it more my friends!

…Kristen Stewart is not good in this. The whole "confused, furrowed brow" act is wearing a bit thin. Up against actresses like Emma Stone and Ellen Page she is lucky to land these lead roles. I don’t hate her, she just doesn’t cut it for me.

I just watched this last night, and it was a good film except for Kristen Stewart. Her acting was terrible. All she did was touch her hair.

Am I the only one that sees Kristen’s acting ability as limited? I like her don’t get me wrong. I want her to do well. I’m a big supporter of her movies. But I constantly see her brush back her hair scene after scence after scene! Plus, the way she delivers her lines is the same in, twilight, adventureland, into the wild, etc. maybe she is just like this in real life or maybe she consistently gets type cast in these movies. but she’s always the same role in every movie!

I think the movie that will challenge her acting chops will be the Joan Jett movie. If she can transform into another person in this one then that will prove me wrong. I’m cheering for her and I’ll probably still see her movies regardless of her performance.

I’m thinking this next movie set the stage for her future success. If she does well then she’ll get good movies, if not, then she’ll be relegated to 2nd tier ones.

There really is an Adventureland Amusement Park in Farmingdale New York that is still around today. I used to live near there in the 1970’s -80’s . It was explained in the special features why they could not use the actual Adventureland since it had been updated over the years that the same rides and games are no longer used. I understand why they could not use the actual Adventureland but I don’t understand why the writer Greg Mottola changed the setting to Pittsburg? I mean Greg Mottola admits that the story was inspired by the actual Adventureland on Long Island so why didn’t he keep the setting there? Couldn’t he have used more familiar Long Island settings as well? I mean what is it to simply change the sign on a store or restaurant that resembles an actual one? Hollywood used to do that al the time?IMO,this was just another cookie cutter coming of age film that used a familiar childhood landmark to grab your attention but does not deliver. I’m very disappointed.

Adventureland! Seriously.. I get it’s supposed to be one of these hipster faux-indie comedies about teens and 20-somethings.. but it just wasn’t funny or interesting in any way. This was like a boring unfunny version of Superbad.. The main character was a pathetic, insecure loser, except instead of maturing and learning something from his experiences, he just continues to make stupid mistakes and ends up worse off in the end than when the movie started. The love interest was an unlikeable bitch who was sleeping around instead of appreciating him.. the side characters were mostly unfunny, there was no clear ‘villain’ when you really need one in every story worth telling. Everyone was a druggy and a loser, and they wonder why they’re going nowhere in life?

It all feels like somebody tried to write a movie based off a summer in their own life as a teenager (the way Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen did with Superbad), except THEY FORGOT TO EMBELLISH IT TO MAKE IT A FUNNY AND INTERESTING STORY WORTH TELLING! You know, that thing they do with EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE THAT WAS BASED OFF A TRUE STORY! Because real life just isn’t that interesting, and neither is this movie. A total waste of time, and thats coming from someone who watches a lot of bad movies.. I haven’t felt this overwhelming urge of "I want my 2 hours back" since sitting through "The Spirit", so that’s saying something. if you must watch this movie, download it, don’t pay for it, at least then you don’t lose money as well as your time.

I can vouch they didn’t do a very good job making this movie look like it was set in 1987. I did get a little nostalgic with the The Cure, Mary Jane Girls, and INXS songs but overall was disappointed. Also, Lou Reed wasn’t a big deal to anyone young in 1987.

Pretty awesome feel good movie. Its very cute without ever getting lame.

Jesse plays great it was fun to see him in this after ive seen Zombieland which he also do very well. And seeing Kirsten in this only makes me think shes a even better actress, dont get all the people who bash her for her acting in Twilight. The movie(Twilight) is ok nothing special, but i find her acting superb. Rest of cast was great too.

Two thumbs up for this movie and lead actors!

I thought this movie was decent for what it was, a somewhat funny love story. However I was expecting something more humorous, I just didn’t find it that funny, and I thought from the previews that it was supposed to be a more funny movie. I just got the impression that it was too dramatic for what they made it out to be

I loved this movie so much. Its got a great cast, with great performances. It really is more of a drama then a comedy, but its the best coming of age movie I can think of. Jessie Eisenberg and Kristin Stewart had great chemistry, the soundtrack was amazing, and they way it was shot was good to.

I just really like this movie. Also if you like this movie watch The Education of Charlie Banks also with Jessie Eisenberg, very good movie and very similar to Adventureland, just more dramatic.

Live it up before your down below.

It is true, director Greg Mottola’s ‘coming of age’ comedy is a surprise masterpiece and a truly misunderstood and over-looked film that was released earlier in the year.

Set in 1987, Adventureland stars Jesse Eisenberg, a college graduate who needs a summer job and is in effect forced to take one at his local amusement park. This job teaches him a lot about life and more importantly introduces him to his first love, played by Kristen Stewart.

Now I have not seen the universally despised "Twilight" movies, but I was greatly impressed by Kristen Stewart’s performance here. She has a great career ahead of her, as does Eisenberg and everyone else in this superbly acted film.

The script is great. There are several funny and well drawn characters, each played brilliantly by everyone in this seemingly perfect cast. I didn’t feel like I was watching characters — I felt like I was watching people.

The whole film is like a joyous and pleasant thrill-ride. I didn’t for one second lose interest in what I was seeing on screen. The last film I saw where I felt so deeply for the characters was The Wrestler, but I think this film extends deeper than The Wrestler. In Adventureland I felt the characters joy, their excitement, their feelings of love, their feelings of sadness…….It’s a great experience when movies achieve this for me. It connected with me on such a personal level, and every moment felt so genuine.

It’s pacing is pitch perfect, and it ended perfectly. Director Greg Mottola, who also directed the previous brilliant "coming of age" comedy Superbad, has now only impressed me more with this film. He took what he had in Superbad and seemingly expanded on it into something even greater. At the time of it’s release, several people expected this to be another raunchy teen comedy like Superbad, and they were then consequently dissapointed when it turned out to be something very different. It is a very funny film, but is also filled with drama and romance. It’s a very sweet film with a huge heart.

Hopefully in the future people will appreciate Adventureland’s greatness, as the truly authentic, genuine piece of filmaking that it is.

Anybody with a little sense would have dumbed Em and dated Lisa P. Did I say date, I mean marry. Lisa P is fine.

The director and writer must be gay for not letting Margarita Levieva play the main role instead of Kristen Stewart.

But seriously the movie put aside, would anybody prefer Kristen Stewart instead of Margarita Levieva in real life?

It seems like the era of these smaller parks is long gone. We now have indoor arcades with all games and 1 or 2 rides, or huge theme parks like Six Flags.

Growing up, we had something called King’s Castleland a couple towns away. The rides were mostly kiddie rides, and there were not very many games. But it was so much fun.

The pacing of this film was really bad with very little comic relief inbetween scenes where literally not much happened. The only laughs to be had in the first 40 minutes of the film where when Jesse Eisenberg’s character kept getting punched in the slacks, which lost its humour (the very little it had) after the first time.

I’m a BIG fan of alot of the people involved in this. Jesse was great in Zombieland and Squid and the Whale, Bill Hader is a great character actor (hugely wasted in this) and Mottola is ofcourse the director of Superbad. So what the hell went wrong? It’s billed as a comedy/drama but it’s hardly any of these things.

I had to turn it off halfway through because i was so disappointed. Maybe i missed a great second half to the film? But probably not because the whole thing just seemed so pointless and forced that i didn’t care how it ended anyway.

Ask me why. The guy has no money. His father is an alcoholic. He loves weed. His dreams are dished. Couldn’t go the "traditional" Euro-trip grads dream about. He is a nice guy and a girl in college dumped him. Sounds familiar?

Well, a guy with pure heart, a genuine human being. Although, a little naive.

In the end though, he gets what he deserves, a beautiful, and lovely girl who loves him.

Its like a redemption to watch the first scene where he is dumped by someone who you later realize was not good for you to start with.

Who says nice guys don’t finish last?
