It\’s the end of yet another night at Hastings Supermarket, an idyllic family grocery store in Buck Lake, Arizona. I saw the high imdb rating, read the positive reviews (among few available) and I watched the movie. It’s pretty standard fare, which means that in the world of schlock it’s a freaking masterpiece. But about 2/3 of the way through the script just falls apart and the contrivances – for the mere sake of forcing the story forward – get too large to ignore. Why don’t the suvivors make a run for freedom when the negotiator comes in instead of running into the back? Why is it crucial that Charlotte come in to make sure the creature is the king, if they’re going to kill it anyway? And why are all those armed cops standing around while two suspects fight and stab each other, or while Sterling shoots Ritter?

It’s as though the filmmakers were in a hurry to finish this thing and couldn’t be bothered to take five minutes to fix the freaking script. It was sloppy, real sloppy, and I really don’t understand why horror fans just take all that sloppiness.

Come on, guys, dust off the cheetos crumbs and show a little self-respect.

    ALIEN RAIDERS(2008)

    (Directed by Ben Rock)

"The funny thing is, we don’t know they’re supposed to be alien raiders until late in the movie. SPOILER ALERT!"- Signed by MartialHorror.

Plot: Super Market employees are held hostage when the supermarket is taken over by a gang of ruthless robbers. But it appears that the robbers aren’t there for money, but to find and seek out an inhuman entity that takes the form humans.

    Review:

The only reason I decided to check out “Alien Raiders”, is because someone requested that I review it. I did a vague background check and had to stop the bile that rose up my throat. “Alien Raiders” is a Sci-Fi original, which is a classy way of saying it’s going to suck. In truth, Sci-Fi originals don’t always suck. “Abominable” was pretty hardcore, so I suppose that while a Sci-Fi original can be good, they just usually aren’t. They lack the talent and especially the money to make anything memorable. Oh well, at least Sci-Fi originals tend to be a bit better than Asylum pictures. Anyway, “Alien Raiders” actually got some decent reviews, so I had hope. Luckily, it did not disappoint. While far from perfect, “Alien Raiders” is an enjoyable, little film that just happens to have a stupid title.

The film follows…..Well, to be honest, I’m not really sure. The writer obviously isn’t sure if he wants to focus on Benny(Jeffrey Licon), a young, supermarket employee, or Ritter(Carlos Bernard), the man masquerading as a robber. Ritter and his group of elite robbers take over the supermarket, killing a few people and holding the rest hostage, Benny being one of them. It turns out that the robbers are actually former scientists who are searching for something…..Oh screw it, screw this ambiguity! Why do you think this movie is called “Alien Raiders”? Because that’s what the robbers really are. This is really a terrible title. It sounds too campy for a movie that seems to be taking itself seriously and it also spoils the twist about what they’re hunting. They don’t even reveal this until past half way through! Soon, the aliens get the upper hand and the grocery clerks must team up with the scientists to kill the alien once and for all.

“Alien Raiders” teaches a valuable lesson about the art of moviemaking on a really low budget: Know your limitations. If you have no money, find an interesting but cheap location that the bulk of the movie can take place in, hire some familiar but inexpensive actors and then hopefully you’ll have enough money to create a convincing monster. Most likely you’ll have to resort to that annoying, blurry, out of focus, shaky, grainy, hyperactive camerawork and editing tricks that conceals the monster for most of the movie. But that is the result of low budget filmmaking. Now you just have to hope you have talent and try your best.

This is director Ben Rock’s first movie and luckily he does have talent. I felt his use of the 1st person POV hand held camera *beep* was pointless, a lame attempt at style when it’s only sometimes used and drops off pretty quickly(this isn‘t a “Blair Witch Project“/“Cloverfield“-esque hand held camera movie, however), but I attribute that as a mistake due to inexperience. He does inject lots of energy, keeping things interesting and exciting. He handles the suspense like a pro(although the script calls for some predictable scares), and even creates some spooky moments when the film focuses on the isolated, mostly abandoned supermarket interiors. This isn’t a great start, but it’s a damn good one and given a bigger budget, I’d be interested in seeing what else he can do.

I’m guessing that the writers felt they were writing something much more intelligent than it was. I will say this, I can see why they’d feel that way. It has plenty of twists and turns, attempts at decent characterization and all in all, I can see the effort. But there is this deep feeling of déjà vu throughout the film. I felt like I’ve seen it before, although granted, I’m not sure from what. I do know that I saw EVERY twist coming a mile away. I’m not exaggerating either. I knew everything that was going to happen before it happened. I also felt that while the acting was good, the characters were pretty lame…the usual, familiar group of peeps, and their relationships(like Benny and his gal) did nothing for me. Although that Mexican kid was pretty funny. I know a guy or two just like him.

In the end, “Alien Raiders” wasn’t as good as it wanted to be, but it was about as good as I wanted it to be. It was ambitious, well photographed(usually), well acted and even had some great moments of suspense as well as a few scares. However, it was super predictable, needed sharper characters and ESPECIALLY needs a new title. But still, for a Sci-Fi original romp, it is very impressive. It’s not as good as "Abominable", however.

Violence: It has its moments. R worthy, but nothing extreme.

    Nudity: None.

Overall: I guess I’d recommend “Alien Raiders” if you’re cool with low budget horror. It’s better than it should’ve been, but at the same time, life will go on if you miss it. We’re not talking “The Thing”-good or “Aliens”- good. More like "Splinter"-good.

They did well for a 2 million dollar budget and only seven weeks shooting time.

    http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/review/2494

In movie terms that had to be rough both the time allowance and the budget. Making it dark was a smart idea to cut down on the cost of the effects with it dark makes them probably look better than they are. Yes the ending I figured that out too without a doubt in the last half, they should have alluded more to someone else being the king maybe that spotter they called in. That would have be a nice way to throw it off the scent I don’t know but then hindsight is 20/20. I am sure it is hard to tell if something is going to work when you already know all the answers to the story line. Besides again 7 weeks and 2 million is not exactly a decent budget or time allowance for a movie.

Whoever came up with "Alien Raiders" as the title needs a clue or two. I have to wonder if they read the script or saw the film at all.

It’s a shame, too, because it’s a decent movie that will be hurt by the inaccuracy of the name. I’m sick and tired of hollywood studios dimissing the genre market and catering to the lowest common denominator. I see a lot of arthouse films, but have a fondness for ‘midnight movies’ and this one would be a lot of fun with friends. But thanks to the title, people who’d enjoy it might not see it.

It was a lot of fun at Fantastic Fest, where I had to wait in the standby line to see it. It was worth the wait. I was smart enough to read the description in the program, which didn’t match the title.

So, please, Hollywood, help though of us with a horror-tooth get to see the movies we enjoy, and stop messing with titles. (and for that matter, stop making all the good horror go straight to DVD, dammit, as this one seems destined to do).

I read tons of great reviews on this movie so I preordered it from Amazon.

I got it and watched it asap, and man what a disappointment.

Everyone of the characters was annoying and you wshed they’d all die. Especially the so called commandos.

You only saw the alien parasite for a second at the end.

The movie was so dark, it made AVPR seem like it was overlit.

All in all, a horrible waste of money.

is that all of the bad actors in this film are dead in the end.

now im not saying those whose dead are the only bad actors in this production, nor im i suggesting the contrary.

and im not saying this is the only good thing so flamers go buy an extinguisher.

(in thinking this) but I still have to say this film is absolute fkn dog 5h1t. Don’t get me wrong I’m no film snob and I will watch crap but I couldn’t even watch it all the way through without skipping forwards.

I downloaded it for free but I’m still not happy about spending part of my life watching it! I can deal with a bad film but I’m shocked at all the positive reviews on here, WTF? It must be cast/crew all posting or something. Deffo conspiracy going on…

Okay… "Inhuman" is cool. "Supermarket" is… well… at least it’s not as stupid as "Alien Raiders".

I mean, who in their right mind looks at the title "Alien Raiders" and goes, "That’s a pretty sweet title!" It sounds like a Sci-Fi Channel Original movie, and we all know how great those turn out.

It almost seems like they’re trying to cash in on the upcoming Indiana Jones movie. "You like Indiana Jones?! Well this is RAIDERS! With ALIENS!" On a scale of 1-10, I rate this title "hardcore, fudge-packingly horrid"… you know… general principles. :)

Sorry if it seems like I’m flying off the handle over a title, but I’m so sick of Hollywood thinking they have to pander to genre fans because they’re idiots. As a huge genre fan, I disapprove. God I hope this movie is better than it’s title.

Even the most retarded movie viewer has to know the girl was infected. Maybe not know it was the king, but still… if she wasn’t infected that would have been shocking.

For people who supposedly have worked on so many missions culminating in this final one, they were really careless.

Things they could have been done differently,

    1. Tie the people up first, or lock them all in a room first, then check them one by one. Hell the random walking around and checking them was so haphazard that I don’t see how they remember who was clean and who hasn’t been checked.

    2. Binding them but not putting them into a secure locked area, and continuously leaving one guard and the guard always turns his/her back to them.

    3. Not taping their mouths shut.

    4. The dead… cop…

    5. The king has to be a worker and not a customer, for the spotter to think the supermarket is the final destination…

    6. Never checking the girl out.

    7. Taking five years to cut a finger. And taking another five to get another person for the test. If they were bound a little better, could have cut all the fingers at once with four guards instead.

It was an above average movie. I understand the mistakes were to generate an interesting plot. No plotholes really.

Rating is a little high, maybe 7.0 more accurate. But horror movies like this are hard to come by, so yeah people would give a higher rating.

Everyone seems to be caught up in the fact that this movie recieved high star markings making it seem better than it is. What people seem to dismiss is the PEOPLE who are watching the film. While people love horror movies like, the average horror fan is not viewing this. Those of us who love the low budget, B-Rated movies are the ones watching it. Now Ive rented some huge pieces of crap in my time but overall this was a lot better than many. Now when I rate this a 6 or 7 it is a 6 or 7 for alow budget, B-rated film. Its not on the same scale as say Saw 1 or Exorcist, ect.. Its comparing apples to oranges when you try to compare high budget to low budget.
