This has been driving me crazy! There is another actress that keeps coming to mind as I watch Sienna in this role. It’s not necessarily someone that always looks like her, but particularly in this role, with her hair color and make-up that way, and also her mannerisms in this movie… Anybody have any idea what I’m talking about? I could just be mad.

I think they went a bit over the top with the rating. Seriously, the sexual content isn’t even explict.

Okay. I’ve been reading quite abit about the overrated sex scenes so I’m wondering if someone could tell me exactly what is in them? Just because I really want to see this but probably watch it with my parents.

    Thanks. :)

I thought this was a hilarious but also endearing twist. One of the funniest moments in the film when their eyes meet at the dancefloor.

God this film is now in my top 5 films. What fantastic actors, (yes, Sienna Miller included), Omid what’s-his-name = genius, funny, whitty story, great pace, beautiful to look at, I’m completely in love with it and it’s the only film with Heath Ledger I can bring myself to watch at the moment without crying.

10 out of 10, wished I’d watched it sooner.

I saw her name in the credits but I guess I had a stupid moment. Anyways, I didn’t recognize her to be Francessca till the end of the film, then I’m like "wow I’m impressed with her acting!"

At the time of this film’s release I was quite dismissive of Sienna Miller’s performance…I just thought she’s a *beep* actress! On reflection and after seeing her impressive and charismatic turns in interview and factory girl and watching Alfie again (she’s the best thing about that mess of a film) I actually think she is a good actress but just not right for Casanova. What does everyone else think?

"CASANOVA"(2005) Heath Ledger is badly miscast as Casanova, the famous libertine, in a film that also suffers from uninspired filming by cinematographer Oliver Stapleton. This film might as well have been filmed in Dubuque, Iowa, as in Venice, since we see so little of the charm of that fabled city.

Ledger serves as little more than a pretty face for a character who had to have had much greater charisma and gravitas than what is offered here to be as successful as he was with both the ladies and his lasting historical record. To do the story justice, it needs Casanova to be portrayed by an older actor like Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power, but where are actors like that today?

I did find great joy in this film in its strong cast of supporting characters including Sienna Miller, Lena Olin, Oliver Platt, Jeremy Irons, and surprising newcomer Natalie Dormer, all of whom are more impressive than Ledger.

Grade: B-, Recommended? A neutral to mildly positive recommendation for this minor cinematic bagatelle.

In either the real world, the Casanova filn world (where cooler things are probably possible to be done) or both worlds, what creatively witty things would Casanova have to do to win your own love (if you’re a straight female, or if you were one, if you’re a male) ?

when Sienna-Fra.. told she loved (Heather)Casanova in that scene in the courtroom when Casanova was accused of seduction and being a heretic – that was CRAP! who’d believe that??? Sienna never showed her affection, let alone love. I don’t know if that’s Sienna’s fault or its director’s, well, directions… or maybe it’s the script – but it was not obvious AT ALL that Sienna-Fra.. has fallen in love with (Heather)Casanova.

Whenever he had the wig on, he also a mole above the right of his mouth. But, every time, he took off the wig, the mole was gone. So, the mole is only part of the entire costume? I thought that was funny.

Was in one of the Casanova puppet shows:

Woman puppet: (thinking Casanova is a puppet) Where is your instrument?

Casanova puppet: I’ll get it out in a moment.

    I giggled at that.

I don’t need you to make me look stupid. I can do that by myself.

This cheesy and predictable movie is not the only source in popular culture to perpetuate totally false myths about the historic figure, Giacomo Casanova, the son of a pair of Venetian actors who lived between 1725 and 1798.

Here and ten myths about Casanova that anyone could debunk, if only they would pick up and read his vastly entertaining autobiography:

    1) Casanova is often portrayed as an irresistible seducer who nonetheless never falls in love with any of his conquests. This is totally false: though Casanova also had many meaningless flings, he often fell deeply in love with many of the women he met, not always succeeding in winning their hearts.

    2) Casanova embodies the ultimate sexist macho: in reality, though calling him a feminist would be excessive, his attitudes to women were well ahead of his time, in fact almost contemporary. For a start, he never judged women’s sexual behaviour, and believed they were entitled to sexual fulfillment as much as men. He said that four fifths of his own pleasure in sex derived from the woman’s pleasure, a concept which was unheard of at the time. He also greatly valued women’s intelligence. He praises his conquests for their wit and brains as much as for their beauty.

    3) Casanova did not keep a score card of how many women he bedded, and did not try to deliberately shag as many women as possible just to up the numbers. In fact by the standards of a contemporary rock star or sports star, he bedded very few women – between 122 (the number he mentions in his autobiography) and 200 (as some historians claim).

    4) Casanova did non lose interest in a woman the moment she had yielded to him. He often rekindled affairs with past flames, even decades later, and kept lively and affectionate correspondences with his past loves well into old age. Casanova was even happy to meet his love children!

    5) Casanova may have been a rascal on several occasions, though actually it wasn’t mostly in his affairs with women that he showed his ruthless nature. However, he was also very generous, even prodigal, and was often taken advantage of by unscrupulous men and women.

    6) Casanova was not 100% heterosexual – he mentions four homosexual encounters in his autobiography, and is totally guiltless about them.

    7) Casanova was not some two-dimensional smug, hunky serial shagger. He was an exceptionally well-read and cultured man who could engage in brilliant conversation with some of his most illustrious contemporaries. Hardly any Casanova movies ever show this. The man was also an exceptionally talented writer. He translated The Iliad and wrote history books, for Godssake!

    8) Casanova once claimed that "marriage is the tomb of love". However, his attitudes to marriage were ambivalent and contradictory. In old age, he regretted the fact that he had never gotten married, but recognised that due to his restless nature, he probably would never have made a good husband.

    9) Casanova was extremely confident, but he was also very self-deprecating, vulnerable and not afraid to show his weak or ridiculous sides. I think that made up for 70% of his attractiveness in the eyes of women. He was NOT a smarmy, super-smooth, square-jawed lothario. At one point in his autobiography he even laughs at himself for a bout of impotence!

    10) Referring to Heath Ledger’s Casanova specifically: the real Casanova was swarthy. He was tall with black hair and eyes, a dark skin, an imposing nose, a fiery gaze and pouty lips. A contemporary wrote that he was "built like a Hercules". As a teenager, Casanova looked a little older than his age, which meant he could bed older women, and in middle age he looked about ten years younger. In his autobiography, of his own appearance he claims that he wasn’t traditionally handsome, though he had "something".

What makes this movie great is the subtle humor. I didn’t catch all of it the first time I watched it, but after several other viewings, I now laugh out loud at many points in the film. It’s the facial expressions, glances, and one-liners that crack me up. :)
