Jerry Fletcher is a man in love with a woman he observes from afar. She works for the government. Fletcher is an outspoken critic of that government. Mel Gibson is a New York taxi driver, who has a strange habit. He makes complicated scenarios of conspiracies and publishes them in a newsletter sent out to five recipients. He keeps doing that, until something unbelievable happens: One of his “conspiracy theories” turns out to be real, and so he finds himself chased by the man hiding behind the whole thing.

Ive seen CT a few times now and actually like the action thriller.

One interesting point is the idea posited that there are two political forces at work…one promoting stabiity and one instability(we see these in the film).

Ive just been listening to Dr Stephen Sniegoski(author of The Transparent Cabal) being interviewed by Karen Kwiatowski (formerly of the Pentagon), and he actually speaks of these two forces…for real…The ones for instability being the NEOCONS. SO CT may be fiction about Conspiracies Theories…but that dosent mean its not reflected in the real world.

Really, I just saw the film and first thing I thought was "this has to be based on a John Grisham book or one of these authors", however I found out it’s an original script. How weird, these stories [almost]always are based on a book.

Am I the only person to find the wheelchair scene as a perfect piece of comedy brilliance? It’s a genius masterpiece. It always has me nearly crying with laughter. It’s so great, I find it necessary to have it’s own board. If there was an award for Single Most Hilarious Scene. This would win it.

In one of the scenes around the part where Jerry is leaving the Barnes and Noble there are people bumping into each other, etc. and there is a gray haired guy who looks like Dick Van Dyke. Is it him?

Honestly. No sex. No nudity. Swearing is a bunch of b*tches and maybe a few others. No f bombs (if I rember correctly). There is some violence, but nothing that I would consider bad enough to give it an R rating. The only thing I remember being anywhere near is when he bites Patrick Stewart’s nose, but that isn’t all that bad. Can anyone answer me?

I saw this in the theaters when it first came out and I remember being confused as hell and I still didn’t know which of the conspiracy theories was true. So anyone out there please tell me what conspiracy that was true?

The name on the license in the cab is clearly labeled "Raffi Paloulian" and also dated 1998. Also, I’m not from a big City, but are taxi drivers aloud to take their cabs home? I thought they’d leave them at the main hub or what not.

When "They" tracked the sale of The Catcher in the Rye, they sent that helicopter commando team right away, right?

So how did they know it was Jerry? He paid in cash, and they didn’t seem to have any visual confirmation that it was him, AND it’s not like he’s the only person to ever buy that book.

I sort of have this picture in my head of the commandos randomly lynching English majors…

    Seems inefficient.

    Where exactly was it filmed?

I know – on Roosevelt Island, but in which building there? Was it in one of the, currently named, City Hospital buildings? Between the bridge and the old ruins of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital at the southern end of the island?

    I would love to know!

I really liked this movie a lot.

I mean how incompetent and non secretive are "they" in this film? People abseiling out of helicopters 20ft over manhattan streets, Jerry’s apartment getting raided by the feds then 10 minutes later julia roberts still acting like nothings going on. What a load of pants!

What do actors Darren Peel, Paul Tuerpe and Dean Winters have in common?

They all played something called a "Cleet" in Conspiracy Theory.

There, that ought to win you any trivia contest involving movies, in any bar anywhere in the world, even in New York City. $5 or free drinks for the night, whatever the stakes are.

But if somehow you’re up against some incredible genius who actually knows the answer, you’ll still come out on top with the follow-up question……..

    What is a cleet?

In computer jargon it’s some kind of whizbang hacker/cracker or wannabe, OK, so that’s not it since nobody in this movie does anything remotely like that.

In law enforcement circles it’s an acronym for some kind of trainee, something like Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. But why would there be a Cleet (notice the lower case spelling, unlike an acronym) at Geronimo? [Actually the IMDb cast list lists Darren Peel as "Geronimo Cleet", but the cast list on my VHS tape of the movie lists him as "Geronimo Cleet #2"].

So, anybody know what a cleet is?

My Jew blood has trouble admitting this, but I watched a few minutes of this on cable and had to finish watching it. Gibson’s pretty amazing in it – nervous, twitchy, and really makes you believe what could have been a ridiculous role.

    Shame he’s such a maniac.

I didn’t see this film till recently. But did any of you experience post Star Trek trauma seeing the capable Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard on Star Trek Next Generation 90’s TV series) as – villain?

It was a shock for me then – tho his air of "benevolent leader" did briefly deceive Julia Roberts’ character!

I thot he did a fine job, incidentally.

Can somebody explain to me why Dr Jonas would’ve wanted to kill Jerry at the hospital if he was planning to interrogate him, like at the end of the film? The switching charts seemed integral to part of the story yet it made no sense for the bad guys to off him at that point.

Also, am I right in saying that Dr Jonas was a subscriber to his newsletter? If so, for how long and why didn’t they go after him sooner? Why wait until he read that one of his conspiracy theories was correct?

I have seen this movie many times, and just noticed that they focus a lot on padlocks.

I wonder if this is supposed to show how Jerry has many locked facets of his mind that need unlocking as much as the other padlocks in the movie.

In fact, the whole movie is the "unlocking" of Jerry’s mind.

    Anyone?

Okay I need some help with this.

    I understand everything that happened.

    But seriously… What???

    Really, what happened?

So here is what I got.

First some dude comes to talk to Mel. Then Mel, he is on some crazy drugs or he is a skitso.

Has like a billion locks on his door.

Then for some reason no one ever says, random people just try to kill him.

So he ditches his car for, again, no reason, so he can get away from no one (really, so this is why I am asking "What?").

Then he meets a girl and she runs into the people he is being chased by.

So then he ends up on some Horse ranch and is like "ohhh just a normal day at work!".

Like, seriously someone kind of explain this mish mash for me. I would appreciate it.

In the film one theory of Gibson was that the US president will be killed in an earthquake that will be made when he is in Turkey. Because like San Andrea fault in Los Angeles (maybe not correct) there is a very active fault here in Turkey and you know that a terrible earthquake happened in Turkey in 17 August 1999. Some people say they saw a fireball coming from sea and many think that this earthquake was made by a sismologic weapon…

Maybe conspiracy but why to talk about the fault in Turkey in that film?

At the start of the film, Mel’s carachter is explaining a load of theories to his passangers. One concerns the preident, NASA and an earthquake. Later in te film, as Julia Roberts is walking through the hospital, a TV in the backround tells of how the president is airlifted out of the country Mel mentioned, thus proving the theory. Did anyone notice any more theories that were proved and had nothing to do with the storyline?

(I apoligise for any factual things that are wrong with this post, it’s been a while since I saw the film)
