Cronos (1993)

In 1535, an alchemist builds an extraordinary mechanism encapsulated into a small golden device. The invention, designed to convey eternal life to its owner, survives its maker until 1997 when it shows up to an antiquarian. Fascinated with the strange device, Gris (Luppi) doesn\’t note that there\’s more than one person looking for it. The promise of eternal life has become an obsession to old and sick Mr. De la Guardia (Brook). He and his nephew (Perlman) will do anything to get the “Chronos Invention”.

An aging antique dealer, Jesus Gris, happens upon an elegant mechanized scarab. When opened, it painfully stabs whomever is holding it, but the wound brings youthful vigor and a vampire\’s need for blood. The device is relentlessly pursued by a dying tycoon, Dieter de la Guardia, whose nephew Angel, reluctant to see his uncle live a moment longer, must still do the old man\’s bidding. Meanwhile, Gris\’s desires endanger his own granddaughter, Aurora.

I picked up the movie in a two pack with Pan’s Labyrinth, not knowing anything about the film at all… the movie wasn’t bad, but the cover itself confused me a bit… At no point was there a hot, young nude woman using the device in the movie, what does the cover/poster have to do with the film at all?

I understand that putting an old man on the cover doesn’t have the same drawing power & sex appeal, but come on…

The alternate versions mentions that the US video release had some explicit nudity added. Where on earth could that have occurred in the movie, and of whom?? Can anyone with the US video release please enlighten me!

…When the old guy started to putting "Cronos Device" on his skin for the second time. Was he doing that subconciously? or was he just making a "natural impulse" to get cure of his "itchy blooded hand"? But,if that was the reason, why did he take the "cause" of his "agony" and hoping it would reduce pain at his hand? Didn’t he look scare when the "device" was suddenly ‘stabbing’ his hand? but,he took it again and put it on his hand? Why?? no obvious reason and explanation appeared on screen.

Thanks for your answer cause,i really feel confuse..

He’s just a general question but did anyone find this film particularly awkward to watch? I’m a big fan of Del Toro, but some parts of this film are just fustrating. The half spanish, half english dialogue- what was that all about? The, dare I say, poor acting – especially from the English speakers in this film. This is without mentioning the dialogue that was so rigid it hurt.

In the commentary by Del Toro, he mentioned that the manual is included in the disc. I tried to look at the menus in the disc and couldn’t find it. Did he mean an actual booklet with the dvd? I only rented the movie from Netflix. To those of you that bought the dvd… did you find the manual? Or is it an easter egg? Did anyone find it? Responses are greatly appreciated :)

I assume that Gris developed the new skin as his own natural life ended with his blood loss in the car wreck. So are we to assume that the alchemist must have died at somepoint to and then was arose and developed the new skin?

First and foremost I’m not going to sit here and tell all those that slate this film that they’re wrong, they’re entitled to their own opinion, it’s just mine happens to disagree with them, and I’d like to try and get to the heart of why I think Cronos is a good film. If you happen to disagree then so be it, but give this a read…

Personally I prefer Cronos to The Devils Backbone, I think it’s darker, more intense and creates a greater deal of empathy with the characters, that however is not to say TDB is bad, far from it, infact it’s very good. The score it has on IMDB surprises me to an extent, but to be honest it also doesn’t surprise me. I’ve sifted through the boards and have seen many many many disparaging remarks about the film, some more coherent than others, for example "THIS FILM SUX BALLZ" is not a legitimate view nor is the poster doing his or herself any credit by coming across as an uncultured yob. Anyway, I think there’s a lot of negativity towards Cronos from the younger end of the filming spectrum. Now I am only 23 so forgive the patronising but where as I got into Del Toro films via the incredible Pans Labyrinth, I suspect there are many others that decided to check him out more on the basis of Hellboy and Blade II. Now i’m not disparaging those that did however I am trying merely to say to them I can see where you’re coming from. Hellboy and Blade II are severe Hollywood-fests packed full of action and at the end of the day good fun. An unwitting film goer that researching Del Toro out and came across Cronos which on the cover (at least here in England) have many comments about how it is "scary as hell’ etc could be deluded into expecting a gore-fest, a shock-fest or some other OTT permutation of the horror genre. The fact is it is somewhat slow paced and it lacks the shock value which these people complain about, perhaps they’ve been desensitised by tripe like Hostel etc, or perhaps they just don’t value it as part of the horror genre, and that’s their opinion.

Mine however is that Cronos is first and foremost a story about family. For those that have seen the film a quick little bit of information which you may or may not have known, but Del Toro likes to use names purposefully. Obviously the name Jesus speaks for itself within the context of the film, but the name Aurora means first light, or dawn, and Mercedes means Mercy. But as I said this is a film about family first, the ‘horror’ element springs in my mind not from people with meat cleavers jumping out of hedges, but from the way that the Cronos device is affected the family and affecting a sincerely mild mannered loving man, and how he is desperately trying to cope with it, and stop it affecting him to the point where he may jeopardise his family. I noted one viewer typing up on these forums "he didn’t try very hard to stop it", fair point perhaps, and though while I can say I’ve never done it, I imagine if this viewer took but one dose of heroin, I’d imagine he wouldn’t be so much typing on these forums as he would be in the gutter looking for his next fix. The Cronos device takes Jesus out of his humdrum existence and makes him, or he perceives at first to have been made, a better man for it, what he fails to realise and does come to realise in the end is that it’s infact his family that have made him the man he is, and he is better off with them and better off without the Cronos device.

There’s also some subtext to be read into about the US – Mexican relationship, people taking what they want with no regard for the others, merely because they want it.

Cronos isn’t a horror film, but what is horrific is the way it attacks our pscyhes in regards to what it can do to someone who is at the end of the day a "good" humanbeing, by way of attacking what it is for all of us to be human and what it means to be human.

You don’t have to like the film but you have to appreciate what he’s trying to achieve.

I hate dubbed garbage but the DVD is out of print and was selling for $50 while the same store had the VHS for $4.99. First videotape I’ve bought in a decade. It was sort of weird. The movie was decent but the dubbing drove me nuts because I could tell they got a lot of the dialogue entirely wrong just to try and match the lips. Anyone who has seen both that can tell me how severely they messed up the translation with the dubbing?
