That’s one thing that didn’t play out well in this film. Carola approaches him after leaving the building in which they’re doing the digging, and he’s on the other side of the wall putting in place bricks that had recently been knocked down by the bus. He approaches her, holding a brick, and tosses her a note. Since the wall was so low at that point, and he had direct access to it, why didn’t he simply jump the wall?

I understand that Heiner might have been hesitant because he suspected that Carola was cheating on him. The problem with that is, before that’s even cleared up, and before Carola can even explain, he tries to jump the wall (and, of course, gets killed).

    Any thoughts?

Even with this bit of illogic, I still loved this movie.

in a movie so loaded with coincidences that it’s in danger of collapsing under its own weight like a soggy water laden tunnel, is when they happen upon the film set of Robert Siodmak’s Escape From East Berlin (aka, Tunnel 28, a movie that actually chronicles their experiences after the fact. I am sure it was intended as a nod, but feels more like a bizarre time warp. I did like the acting in The Tunnel, but still prefer Siodmak’s version. For all it’s flaws and inaccuracies, it’s a tighter, more suspenseful and better constructed film.

Which other German or American or whatever movies dealing with flight from the GDR into West Germany exist? (The only I found is Night Crossing.)

One tiny line of dialogue totally threw me. When they are building the tunnel they get an invaluable tool from someone who has a connection at the Bosch company, the maker of the tool. This is being explained to Matthis by the benefactor at the top entrance of the tunnel. The response by Matthis is totally perplexing because he replies, "Is he cute?"

What does this line have to do with the plot? Since Matthis has a wife and isn’t revealed to be bisexual, a closeted homosexual or even interested in an affair, what does this line have to do with anything? Is it just bad interpretation? (I watched the film with English subtitles.) Was there some subplot that got edited out and this line is a vestige of that? It just makes no sense to me. Does anyone have an explanation — or even convincing speculation?

Did this movie really had budget of 7M$ and gross only few thousand dollars? It would be pretty non-profit project from economical point of view

Did anyone find that the people playing the NBC Producers of the documentary seemed to have northern British accents? they were obviously trying to do American accents…but they really weren’t succeeding…

Anyone else think the music was a bit strange when Harry went to the West towards the beginning and also when the guy went into the East as the plumer (the song was "this is a man’s world."). I thought those choices seemed really out of place and inappropriate for the particular scenes. That’s the only complaint I have with the film- it was great.

I can’t seem to find any info about any of the heroes in this movie. I mean these people are like the Schindlers of post-WWII Germany, so I’m quite surprised there’s no info or even pictures of the real people on the internet.

Listen, I’ll talk. I’ll talk so much it’ll make your hair curl.

I saw this wonderful film last night. I had never before heard of this true story so I have only the way they were portrayed in the movie to serve as the "history book" so to speak. I am wondering which parts of the film are not historically correct. Did Harry really dress up as an East German guard? Were the communists really aware of the tunnel before the escape? Did Heiner really die with Lotte listening on the other side? Did one of the tunnelers really pose as a plumber to get the water main fixed from the East German side?

Germany has been impressive lately in potraying their past whether or not the stories are pleasent. And this one is another solid proof of that. Even with its minor mishaps, I thought this was certainly among the best of German movies dealing with their history.

Just one question though. What did the Americans do with the tunnel footage? Did they really make a movie or did that part ever really took place at all?

    Auf die Freiheit!!

I have watched this movie in German, and I don’t speak German. I managed to follow the story, also because parts of it were known to me previously.

However, I was unable to understand all of the closing text/epilogue, only very vaguely and just partially.

Could a good soul, who watched it in their native tongue, tell me what happened to these people?
