    First off, I LOVE Madea!

I think Tyler Perry is brilliant. His stories can relate to ANYONE…not just blacks. I am a 39 year old white male.

    My thought:

What Charles (Steve Harris) did to Helen (Kimberly Elise) was horrible…dragging her and literally throwing her out of their house…with his girlfriend watching. That was pathetic on his part!

When Helen is ‘taking care’ of Charles after he is shot, when she slapped him and got up in his face, I was applauding her. He deserved that…but I did question her motive when she dumped him into the tub. When she is eating salad and he starts crying, I felt she crossed a line.

While what he did was horrible to her, I felt that she was becoming rather sadistic with him. I didn’t like her character much after that.

What do others think…and serious replies only.

If you don’t have anything worthy to add to the discussion, then don’t.

    My favorite film:

    "Carrie" (1976)

I know the song playing while Charles is going through rehab must be by Heather Headley. Anyone know the name of the song? I love her music.

Was I the only one who laughed hysterically when the completely helpless and paralyzed Charles was beaten, starved, and almost drowned by his ex-wife? The part where she wanted him to stop breathing underwater had me in stitches! Sadism is HILARIOUS! Especially when the completely helpless handicapped person "deserves" it!

Don’t you guys agree? Helen should compare notes with Dennis "BTK Killer" Rader. I think they’d have a lot in common.

Why does this movie always drive me to tears?

I don’t mean this in a bad way. If you would have told me that this movie would touch me as deeply as it has, I would have told you that you were insane! This movie did(and still does) reach inside of me to my core.

This movie is a truly special movie in a lot of ways. It is very moving and has an incredible message of love and redemption. That is exactly what our lives should be about.

I have to say that it is a beautiful movie.

I missed parts of this movie (am currently watching it on TBS) and at one point Charles asks where his children are. By Helen’s response, I can tell they were not with her. Who is their mother/s?

It drives me crazy that there is NOTHING on it! She is enjoying it so much & all it looks like is a pile of baby spinach. I am not saying it has to be loaded down like a Cobb salad or anything, but who in the heck eats a pitiful salad like that? The whole purpose of the scene is that she is torturing him by eating in front of him & she pick leaves! I just think it is silly. I also just chalk it up to the fact that they were supposed to be super-uppity (Sp?) & it looked "elegant" with the wine & classical music. Has anyone else noticed this & did it make sense to you?

PS… I LOVE the movie, so I am not downing it as a whole… just that one scene.

I suppose that could be the title of the next film or after looking at the list of 7 features that came out since this 2005 film it might just be the answer to how he is so prolific. I mean sure he was on Oprah and thus beknighted as a success. But eight movies between 2005 and 2009? He must have had quite the stockpile of scripts. I know it started as a play? No? Was it also supposed to be a TV series?

This reaction is coming from a white male. I finally saw this movie on DVD and the poster or DVD cover made me reluctant to put it on. It was much better than I expected. I don’t get the appeal of Norbit for example, but I can see this bunch of people holding interest. The big question is why this universe of characters and why aren’t more writer/directors this prolific? There are plenty of ensemble movies that had more room to explore. I’m also stunned by the religious aspect which is so out of fashion. It actually works.

For virtually any film you look up on IMDb, you can find the flathead who came in to post how awful it was.

    This time, it’s me.

I don’t care about the "issues" of the current unenlightened world that Flip Wilson, Red Foxx, Carrol O’Conner et al were trying to lead us from. We all tend to feel more comfortable in our own cliques. So what.

But what was this movie supposed to be? Romantic comedy? Social satire? Jerry Lewis redux? Relationship tragedy? I can’t think of any other film to compare it to, yet it blazes no new trail. It was kind of like setting a beer can on the remote’s channel changer button and trying to make sense of the "show".

And I want to find the steel mill I can work in and come out looking like that after twelve hours.

Tyler Perry may be a comic genius. Whatever this production was, it keeps anyone from realizing it.

My apologies to those who liked it, and I take full responsibility for my tastes not agreeing with yours.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

It boggles the mind that this movie is so popular. I understand minority audiences wanting to see movies with situations and characters that they can relate to, but this movie (along with other Tyler Perry projects) is pathetically BAD. It’s just bad, for God’s sake. And it’s not simply bad in a Martin Lawrence, Larry the Cable Guy, low-brow kind of way. It’s bad in the sense that it garishly violates fundamental principles of aesthetics. It wants to be a serious drama about values, but then it throws in this Eddy-murphy type man-in-drag character that is pure farce, and ends up undercutting the dramatic side of the story. The two sides don’t mesh. It’s like mixing honey and vinegar. The infelicity in the tone shift is like something an 8 year old would write.

I have seen enough "Cops" to know that Helen should not have gone to jail when she first "breaks" into the house. Law states that she has a right stay in the house since it is her home, aka, she should not have been charged with trespassing. Additionally, her taking money, regardless of a pre-nup, I think, would not have been considered theft, since they were still married. Now Madea chopping up the furniture in the living room, that would be destruction of property and Madea would be charged.

When the "po-po" arrived, it would have been viewed as a domestic dispute, and no matter how great of a lawyer you are, they tend to lean towards the rights of the woman especially since Charles was threatening violence and manhandling Helen.

Now, if you she showed up after they divorce was settled, that would have been a different situation.

You know the sound that Goofy makes when he falls? That’s my quote.

When they showed the outside of his house towards the beginning, I wondered to myself, why would a couple need a house that big? Then, I saw in the trivia that it is Perry’s house. Was that for the interior, exterior, or both types of shots?

If it was for the exterior too…. DANG! That is one big-a$$ house! It looks like an old British estate.

Was reading through various threads in here to make sure no one missed any of their questions answered and one that I found interesting was several ppl were not familiar with Tyler always adding lines within his plays and/or movies that came from other themes.

So figured why not make a thread for us to list off different characters and/or lines that Mr. Perry took from other movies. If possible perhaps also mention which play and/or movie he added it into. Will start with one he did for this movie

    1. Wire Hanger (that Madea finds at Helen’s house) ~ which was a reference to ‘Mommy Dearest’

this movie is refreshing cuz that’s what my husband did to me. he didn’t beat me up but he has pushed me and threatened to hurt me, he also has a porn addiction, has had at least 2 emotional affairs, puts his female friends above me (his own wife) and he doesn’t defend me when his female friends tell him lies about me when they have never talked to me.

now karma found a way with my husband (luckily we are separated) he is flat broke (when we get divorced he will have no more money left in his account because all his money will go to me and our child), he is working in the US illegally (his visa expired he needs a green card), his driver’s license will expire next year, he has no peace or happiness in his life. he says he is also trapped because he isn’t happy. i have called the police on him because i didn’t know if he was gonna harm himself (the police report will be good evidence for my divorce lawyer) saying he is mentally unstable.

little by little my husband’s life keeps spiraling down and my life keeps getting better.

I get that in the beginning, Charles put Myrtle in a home because he didn’t want to ever see her or put up with anything from Helen’s life, but after he threw Helen out, and he quit paying for her bills at the home, why did she stay? Madea has 5 bedrooms in her house, if she could find room for Helen, she could for Myrtle too, because as far as we know there was nothing wrong with Myrtle.

I actually liked seeing this actress playing Brenda compared to what we got from the original play. But do question the character ~ far as how she came off.

    1. She’s all Ms Nice to Helen at the office but then turns into Ms. Nasty at the house.

    2. Now I understand they did it to bring out the worse in her character but you would think any normal person would tell her man to handle his business (i.e kicking out his wife) without needing to be there.

    3. Now I know they showcased her having that one kid via the office scene but Charles mentions to Helen about having 2 kids. Was the other kid hers as well? Now that brings up more issues I have with the movie (in general) ~ I know this was Tyler’s first shoot so mistakes were bond to occur but you would think they could have shown these kids at the house or give background to why this lady allowed herself to get knocked up by a married man. True he had money and perhaps that could have been a good storyline to have added.

I recall the singer at the club was in Tylers play ‘Madeas Class Reunion’ and another one but forgot that someone mentioned on here in the past about the model/turned actor who played the nephew in ‘Madea Goes To Jail’. Just rewatched this movie tonight to finally realize that he played the guy in the resturant who proposed to his gf.

I most likely will try to look their names up but in case I forget can someone remind me of who they are. Also were there any other actors/singers from the plays that were in this movie?

I know that Tyler took the idea from some scary movie where rabbits are chasing all these ppl and would first like to know what is title of that movie he got the idea from and would like ppl’s opinions on how they took that scene (such as did you understand it/question it/other)?

I absolutely love what Madea does and that seems about as good an approach to take as any, cuz after 18 years half of everything would INDEED belong to Helen. "Which half you want? You want this half you want this half?"

And to think that in only 10 minutes she was able to cut in half the sofa, the table, the piano and everything else, good thing they didn’t have a dog.

when he drags her out of the house and throws her outside, she could have just called the cops and reported him for domestic abuse. She had a witness (Orlando) to back up her story as well. He would have been arrested and there is no way in hell, prenup or no prenup, that he could just throw her outside after 18 years with no money or anything and move his new girlfriend in. It just wouldn’t happen. If she had him arrested that first night, she could take him to the cleaners because of all the years of abuse she endured. She could say that because he was controlling and abusive he forced her to sign a ridiculous prenup that no woman in her right mind would sign. Because she signed under duress, it could be voided. I think overall this is not a bad film, but I have a huge problem with the unrealistic premise. No one can actually do that to a spouse of 18 years without consequences. She’d have options in real life. Charles may have been a lawyer, but there were other lawyers out there who would have been happy to take him on.

Im black and I must say that just because you’ve been married for a long time doesn’t mean its gonna last forever. She should have left without a fight. Why stay somewhere, when your not wanted there.

Why people are still getting married is beyond me. Whats the point? Once someone gets tired of you they leave you or cheat on you. Marriage is for the old farming days. Theirs actually nothing in it for a man to get married. Their is no benefit in it for him. Lame
