thought it was kinda funny that everyone was shocked that nick cannon couldnt read music, when if you think about it, he really doesnt have to cause drums are one note. (that you can clear see when they show the music sheets of what he has to play) only thing he needs to understand is the timiing between notes: i.e. when to play faster and when to play slower. which can basically be learned by looking at how close the notes are or hom many bars are connecting the notes

Check out my band if you like good music! http://www.myspace.com/thisheroalegend

I would be the LAST one to just make up something like this for attention, being just about the whitest person I know, but it seems like every single movie prominently featuring strong black characters gets trashed on IMDb. The low ratings of the Tyler Perry movies are one thing; I saw half of Diary Of A Mad Black Woman and was shocked at how bad it was. But there are plenty of movies like this one, which, while far from perfect, has a lot of original and enjoyable moments. Has anyone else noticed this?

Marching bands don’t make only ONE formation in an entire show, but maybe around the number of two hundred formations for the average high school marching band. Formations will never be in the Initial of the marching band’s school. A Marching band’s show will last around 7- 12 minutes, not thirty seconds. and a marching band will never hire a rapper to sing during their show. Another thing to point out: a band director never conducts the band during a performance, a drum major will.

another thing, I Believe I can Fly. Really? No, most bands will play something more traditional that an R. Kelly song

This movie gets worse ever time i see it. But i do appreciate how it is a movie about a marching band.

This movie sucks, its a movie about a DRUM LINE !! I was forced to watch this crap in school and I couldnt believe that someone thought this was a decent idea. Christ man who funds this garbage ? I bet its the same guy that did "you got served". Also band is for fags, do something useful and learn a marketable skill instead of being a drain on society.

Atlanta A & T University is a fictional school created for the film. But Morris Brown College is a real school in Atlanta. I found it very poor judgement to depict a real school as having a corrupt jive-turkey band director and a band with questionable performance merit. Morris Brown College has had more than its share of unfortunate trouble. It certainly does not need any bad public relations of the fictional variety.

Ladies and Gentleman of America! This movie is the worst example of Marching Percussion that I have ever seen in my life! In no way did any of the ideas expressed in this film portray a sensible idea of what marching percussion is all about. I have experience in Oviedo High School’s drumline as well as winning a world title with the 1st Degree indoor drumline from Orlando! This movie was the biggest embarrassment to any person who has a clue about marching percussion. I’m sorry for those of you who can’t stand to hear it and think that this movie is their idle…if you want to see real drumming go to you tube and search Tim Jackson Tenor Solo or Blue Devils or any drum corp. Notice how they don’t move at set. Notice how no one talks back. NOTICE HOW THEY PLAY GOOD CHALLENGING STUFF!!!!! This film is pathetic! I could go on for day’s about this film. Technique awful, notes disgusting, and if they used a machine that read notes played on a drum…..IT WOULD HAVE DIFFERENT NOTES WRITTEN CAUSE A SNARE DRUM HAS ONLY 1 TONE!!!!!!!!! I hate this movie. Please…try to prove me wrong…I know what I’m talking about! I know I’m being very egotistical, but everyone who know’s I’m a drummer says, "Hey what about the part in Drumline….". I’M SICK OF IT!! THIS MOVIE IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

So maybe I’m just ignorant to this whole aspect of marching bands, but when exactly would they perform like they did during the tie-breaker? And if it’s only happened this one time, why in the world did both bands rehearse to that degree for the off-chance there might be a tie??? And if you’re gonna say it was spontaneous, like an off-the-cuff rap rhyme, the train back to Crazyville is now boarding.

If you still don’t know what the real thing is like, this is it. They just had the ’08 competition yesterday at the Georgia Dome. You can buy last years dvd through hondabattleofthebands.com. My old school rocked it-EAGLE PRIDE(NCCU)!!! Most white marching bands don’t know much about the competitiveness of HBCU’s bands, but it’s real.

this movie showed the drumlines going agains each other. At historically black schools, all of the sections compete. When I marched, I remember our whole band waiting at another schools band room and then having a showdown, section by section! Thats just how we do it.

Do we really need a movie about drums? Seriously. It’s drums. Who cares about drums? I certainly do not.

Why don’t we just make a movie about a bunch of people in a field eating their own pheces. And then insert the stupid coach-student relationship side plot (and add a romantic interest) .

    Come on.

Now I might clarify and say "historically black colleges" or some #### like that, but you get what I’m asking.

When Devon & Sean are playing in the band room, the machine records and puts the music that they play onto paper. First, everything’s written on the middle line, and snare music should be on the C line, but that’s beside the point. Why are there flats and sharps in the music. I know backsticks and rimshots would make different tones on the drum, but they’d be more than just a half-step interval in the music. Also, B-sharp would be a C, so.. why not do that? I’ve never used a machine while playing. If I write music, I do it by hand or through Sibelius. Are sharps and flats just ways of noting different directions in the music (backsticks and rimshots)?

Also, there’s no chance in hell the music Devon played is as easy as what’s on that paper, unless the tempo at the top of the page is quarter = 250.

Sorry, stuff like this bugs me. I’m a drummer and I’m just one of those guys that can’t enjoy the movie because it’s so technically incorrect. This is just one thing that I wonder about since I don’t know how these machines work. Thanks for any comments.

I saw this movie on tv and in the very first scene I saw tough looking guys so I was like, nice a USA movie about a poor guy who is good in Rugby/Basketball and fights too reach the top.

Next scene I saw the same tough looking guys in a redicilous outfits playing tuba and drums

lol talk about a let down.

In every scene the makers try to create a ‘cool’ atmosphere but the fact is..

    This movie it totally g.a.y

The only unwatchable thing in this movie is his terrible performance. If it wasn’t for Zoe Saldana I wouldn’t have made it all the way through. Also how am I supposed to believe that that Cannon douche could ever get a girl like her. When the two are in scenes together he looks even more immature than usual.

In most movies the viewer isn’t supposed to hate the main character, you can’t help it in this film.

In my opinion Cannon could have been cut out of the script all together. The story could have evolved around the guy that was a pledge in a fraternity. He was atleast watchable.

Who else thinks they should make a sequel to this movie? But, instead of being about college bands, they should make it about the serious drum and bugle corps like DCI. Bring back Nick Cannon if ya have to, but the true marching bands are the DCI drum and bugle corps. Their drumlines are 1000 times more precise than a college band. They’re the best of the best from all over the country.

I remembered that the sorority was Sigma alpha iota, I think.

Are the two a real fraternity and sorority, or just made up to give the movie a better college feel?

I would like to hear your opinions. Do you think marching band is a sport, or not.

Actually, I’m 50/50 on this. I know we work hard, outside, like any other person in other sports do (with the exception of hockey and ice-skating), but I think what makes us stand out, is that we learn something…educational wise. Learning music.

    This is just my opinion.
