From Within (2008)

If you believe in the light, you've got to believe in the dark See »

In a small Maryland town, the suicide of an outcast teenager triggers a string of violent suicides. These suicides seem to stem from a curse which spreads when any person, who witnesses the suicide, is possessed by an unseen evil force which leads them to commit suicide themselves. A young teenager, named Lindsey, thinks there is a connection of the events to Aiden, the outcast brother of the first suicide case. But Lindsey must race against the clock when she witnesses her mother fall victim, and must try to find a way to stop the curse before it kills her too. Meanwhile the God-fearing townspeople, led by a fanatic preacher with a connection to the events also, form a vigilante group to take the law in their own hands.

In Grovetown, there is a series of suicides after the suicide of an outcast teenager. His brother, Aidan, waits for the return of his cousin Sadie to the family house for the funeral. When Dylan, who is the Christian son of the reverend, beats up Aidan, the undesirable youngster is helped by Dylan\’s girlfriend Lindsey who drives him home. They talk about Dylan\’s mother Candace Spindle who had a grimoire to worship her gods at the creek and was blamed by the god-fearing locals of murdering a man, then she died in a suspicious fire. Lindsey and Aidan befriend each other and soon she finds that Aidan\’s brother has cursed the town with his own sacrifice, unleashing an evil force that is leading the inhabitants to commit suicide.

Was I the only one laughing my ass off in satisfaction for the last 3 minutes of this movie as they showed that all of the townspeople had killed Themselves? If anything, the movie is worth watching JUST for that last part. Classic.

Wow. This was pretty amazing. The cinematography was just so unique and beautiful, especially the scenes at the end on the doc.

Not what I was expecting. Yay.

    A few questions…(SPOILERS!)

The end? Explain it to me. The christian boy shot him first?! WHEN?!

    So the spell didn’t end.

Such a great ending none the less.

This could have gotten a wider release other than horrorfest…just sayin’.

There aren’t many posts on here either. Who else liked this film?

saw this at the tribeca fest and kept asking myself: is this horror or comedy? dull, not scary, silly (the audience laughed a few times at scenes that were meant to scare). just a big old mish-mash of nothing intriguing or interesting. the acting was just whatever. i think this was the type of movie that might have worked as an episode of x-files, but not as a feature-length film.

Two of my friends saw this movie and keep arguing over one scene. One friend claims that Aidan was shot before he could kill himself. The other claims that Aidan killed himself before getting shot. So, who’s right?

she was killed? I mean, the guy was talking to her while she was bound and then gagged, telling her a bit about himself, and I thought that this is what the late great Gene Siskel would describe as the fallacy of the talking killer. Meaning, the killer has the victim in the palm of his/her hand, and all the killer has to do is to kill the person but no, the killer talks, talks, talks, while the victim thinks, thinks, thinks, and then subdues the killer. Here, the killer talked, and the KILLED Sadie, that sarcastic bully-bull who may’ve deserved what was coming to her. Did that not grab you?

I cannot believe the bad things that happened to Sadie, played by my favorite young actress, Margo harshman, in this movie. First, she gets pummeled, then dragged-butt bouncing-down the stairs, and then kicked. Then, of course, she was covered with gasoline and burned to death. I can’t really imagine the beautiful Margo burnt to a crisp, but at the end of it, she must hve looked like those vampires in the movies who are dragged into the sun and who burst into a flaming death, ending in a grotesque big toothy jaw and a lot of burnt dust. But here is my fantasy interlude into this movie:

Shia Leboeuf, the Steven’s kid from "Evens Stevens", approaches Sadie just outside of the mansion.

"Hey, Tawny, good to see you. Haven’t seen you in five years." The Stevens Kid bounces up to Sadie.

Sadie, sour-faced, responds, "I’m not Tawny anymore. Now I’m a cynical and evil witch."

"You were always a artsy, alternative, and a little different, Tawny, but never cynical and evil. I don’t believe it."

"Well, you were never that swift, Stevens kid, and I always liked your sister, Ren, better than you anyway. And my name is Sadie. Now, I’ve got to go burn a book of curses, if you don’t mind?"

Never one to quit, Stevens continues, "Tawny, stop this. Something bad, real bad (the Stevens kid is having premonitions of Tawny’s burnt, evil-skull death smile)is gonna happen if you go ahead." He grabs her shoulders.

Pulling away violently, Sadie shoves him aside, "Get outa my way, idiot", she commands. But, consistant with all of the bad things which will ultimately happen to her in this movie, she trips on a stump. She falls face first on the grass. "Dammit, Steven’s kid, get outa my life. Get away from me", as she pushes herself up and rushes into the mansion.

Drinking, smoking, sleeping around. Evil Christians are a film staple, boring, but usually they’re portrayed as holier than thou. This bunch doesn’t seem any different than anybody else, except they mouth "Christian" platitudes.

IMO the writers have never been inside a fundamentalist Christian sect.

    Spoilers..

At the end of the movie, the heroine girl tries to strangulate herself with a rope, which i found very unbelievable, because how can someone strangulate him/herself ? it cannot be done, because once someone strats, he then cannot breath and hence feels unconcious and so his hands would loosen up the rope, so he won’t be able to do it, it cannot be done physically, its impossible !!

If they have tied the rope to another object, like in hanging, then yes it can be done, but never with ones own hands !!!

I have continued to watch The After Dark Horrorfest, for the last 2 years.

I’ve been almost entirely disappointed, but being a young aspiring filmmaker, I’m intrigued by these experiments in low budget territory and I realize that films have a lot of obstacles to overcome.

I just barely started watching this years festival with Perkins 14,(I’m about 30 minutes into it) and it feels like 8th graders making a parody of a psychological thriller. Who knows, maybe it will turn around, but I’m doubtful.

Obviously everyone here has some opinion about modern horror films, and so I’m posting this as a poll to gauge your thoughts on the state of horror today. I’m currently working on my own sci-fi/horror film, and so your input is greatly appreciated.

Answer any or all of these:

    1. What do you think makes a good horror film? Site examples.

    2. What are your favorite horror films of the last 5 years? Be honest!

    3. What do you think needs to be improved? (Be specific not just "writing, acting, etc.")

Thanks in advance, and I hope to get some thoughtful answers from you guys, and will eventually write some of my own.

Did anyone think Kelly Blatz was a lot like Scott Mechlowicz from Euro Trip?

I mean obviously different characters, but the VOICE, and the face are quite similar, I had to look it up cause I thought he had just gained weight.

ALSO, I LOVED this film. I really wish this was in theaters, but then people still wouldn’t appreciate it.

Go to an acting or filmmaking school, also watch thousands of lower budget films, ESPECIALLY horror, then try and tell me this movie didn’t rock.

    9/10!!!

This movie was very satisfactory for the budget that they were given. The movie also had a very good twist at the end that seem to come out of no where. This is sad to say but this probably is the best film out of all the Horor fest box set season three movies.

Don’t you think you’d notice that the person who is randomly standing in your living room looks exactly like you, right down to your precise outfit, and yet you ask "Who are you? How did you get in here?"
