As Tracy is singing "Welcome to the 60’s" WHAT was it that Edna was so shocked about when Tracey turnes the TV on and points to it? Was it that there was three black woman dancing on tv or was it over what they were wearing?

I browsed through this board to make sure this hasn’t been discussed before, and it hasn’t!

I’m playing Corny in my school’s production of Hairspray, and I wanted to start a thread for people who participated or are doing so in local Hairspray productions. This is a thread to share our experiences while we presented an amazing movie in our own way!

I am a huge fan of the original Hairspray movie because it’s quirky and strange and fun, but this newer processed cheese food imitation SUCKED BIG TIME. It was so sanitized and whitewashed, it had NONE of the charm of the original.

The lead actress was not pretty AT ALL. She’s funny-looking and not even half as pretty as Rikki Lake and not even close to being a better dancer. Zac Efron is also very boring (but pretty).

And whoever thought that John Travolta in a dress would be a good idea needs to be shot.

They really need to stop making bad remakes of good films. Two thumbs down.

Where I live, there is no cultural history of black people so I’m very ignorant in these matters but I know there’s a tendency to put black people all under the same hat. It occurred to me while watching Hairspray that Maybelle and Seaweed are a completely different color.

I was thinking at first that maybe Seaweed’s father was this dark too but then little Inez is a similar color to Maybelle so that doesn’t work (unless their had different fathers?).

Is this due to ancestry from different African countries or some sort of evolution of paling (I, myself, am a dark-skinned person but I think I’m still very pale compared to others of my race because I live in a different climate and spend much time indoors so I found this idea possible)? Is there some sort of a whitening therapy (I’ve heard of dark women who put on some sort of a cream to make their skin whiter as white people go sunbathing or put on tan spray)?

Please, educate me (be nice though)!

So you pick a scene from the movie and ruin the moment!

    Example:

    Tracy: Good morning Baltimore! Every-

Lady: Shut up fatty! I’ve had enough of you!!

I got my eye on you!

I’ve never seen such revolting outfits… I mean, there’s period, and there’s blurg. I was bummed out at what Edna, Tracy and Maybelle were wearing (for a start!) in You Can’t Stop the Beat.

What the hell’s wrong with expressing yourself?

I got so spoiled because Hairspray came out one summer, and then Mamma Mia the next…can’t wait till ‘Wicked’ comes out, not to mention Mamma Mia 2

I might be reading too much into this but I love sublimimal jokes and I want to see if I’m right on this one

Is Penny’s mom, Prudy, a prostitute? some of the quotes are hinting in that direction (the quotes mignt not be EXACTLY right but they have the general jist of it):

Edna: It takes a lot of effort to get out your personal stains…

Seaweed: (untying knots) was your mom in the navy? *I think that’s a s&m joke, if you don’t know what that is, sorry for destroying your innocent minds*

Penny: (about a room) I don’t even know why this room is here *I know it’s a bomb shelter but it could be a sex chamber as well*

Prudy’s also really catholic so she could be overcompensating…it’s psychalogical stuff

His acting chemistry between him and Travolta is amazing. He really makes me believe that the two are married. At the end when Travolta is singing on the set and he holds his heart while she’s singing, I seriously tear up believing they are married. Truly an amazing actor!

Tracy’s parents both have blue eyes (recessive trait) which means they should only be able to have blue-eyed children, yet Tracy’s eyes were brown!!!

Anyone else actually notice that when they watched the movie???

Or did they have colored contacts in 1962?

At the dance she was a complete brunette and then when she arrives on the show she has blond highlights and bangs…there was no transition.

Okay, the first one: In the deleted scene where Velma gets arrested, what exactly is she getting arrested for? Cheating in the pageant?

Second one: What is CinemaScope? In simple terms? I’ve looked it up, but the definitions that I’ve read aren’t really understandable.

And lastly: Why does Penny call herself a checkerboard chick? Technically, a checkerboard is red and black. A chessboard is black and white.

During the song "I Can Hear the Bells" when Tracy sings ‘Round three is when we kiss inside his car, Won’t go all the way but I’ll go pretty far,’ we see Link & Tracy in a car. The camera closes in on Tracy and when the camera pans back, instead of good-looking Link, it’s a nerdy-looking guy (or Link made up nerdy).

    Has anybody else noticed?

    Does anyone have an explanation?

I absolutely loved Jerry Stiller’s performance as Mr. Pinky. He plays the part to perfection with a wonderful mix of ‘creepy promoter’ and ‘used car salesman’. I can’t take my eyes of him. The role is comic genius. He knows his clientele well and treats them appropriately.

I love it. I dunno why, but that one line (from Without Love) "I surrender happily" and the little fall that goes with it…super kawaii. I’m not a huge fan of Zac personally, but I loved it. I used to do it all the time my self, although not in the same context. ^_^

    Like I said, lame. =^.^=

Do me a favor please, if you’re gonna comment, don’t be a bastard…I’m allowed to my opinions. ^_^

    Thanks.
