it looks amazing and i love matthew macfadyen. i really would like to see it and it was made 3 years ago and still isn’t here. It says limited release in 2007 but

how limited will that be? does the mean it will eventually be on our region dvd?

why is it that all the good movies never get here? how lame.

I hope that anyone who is on this site and hasnt seen the film will go and rent it, because it is the best film to have come from NZ since ‘Once were Warriors’.

I am dissapointed the film hasnt recieved that much praise over the years.

When other young Australian filmmakers ask me what films to watch, I mention this film specifically. It touched me deeply when I saw it. The cinematography is beautiful, the film incredible moving. It really inspired my last short film and the feature films I am writing.

Ok, so when Andrew finds Johnathan in the developing room with all the pictures of Celia he takes them away and says something like, "You disgust me." The audience later discovers that Andrew says this because of Andrew’s hatred toward Celia (although at the time we infer that Andrew simply disapproves of his son’s voyeuristic…hobbies).

Johnathan is obviously upset by this, but it makes me wonder – at the end when Paul confronts his nephew saying "I know you liked her," was Johanthan upset because he himself knew the dark secret (which I guess would make them cousins?), or was he upset about Celia’s disappearance? Did Johnathan ever know the secret and was simply intrigued by Celia or did he have a crush on her in the beginning? Just a little confusing.

there’s a song playing when the dude drives to the river? it has the lyric that

has the words listen to your heart breath, sounds a bit like crowded house or the cars, although its neither what is the song title and artist.

What a gem of a film. I just watched it last night and I was captivated and mesmerized from start to finish! Matthew McFadyen is sublime, I had no clue what was going on which was great. I assumed a lot and started thinking that I had it figured out, then out of the blue, there is that scene where Paul picks up a girl in a bar and takes her home and puts the belt around his neck, I am going what!!!!!!! At the end, I was moved, saddened and thought the puzzle was so well knitted together. Brilliant performances from all and the cinematography was awesome, the directing was sensationa!!

    Peace

I am one of those people that stop watching when a film becomes unbelievable. Losing the passport (near beginning) was to me at least just not believable. This was used to enable his brother to know that he was at the service. While this may have been wanted for the story, another method could have easily been used.

This is such a glaring point I hesitate to ask, and show my stupidity, but we’re told at the beginning of the film that the will is split three ways: Andrew, Paul, and ‘a charity’.

It’s made apparent later that this charity is some sort of trust fund for Celia, the third child of Andrew and Paul’s father, who isn’t given the money directly because she’s a minor.

But surely the father’s solicitor would be legally bound to notify her of the bequest, and the trust fund? He would have to set it up, presumably – it would be his duty as the solicitor carrying out the will. Under the circumstances the father wouldn’t simply give the will to Andrew to execute, would he?

Obviously if Celia were told, there would be no story. What am I missing? Or am I revealing my legal ignorance?

Quite apart from that, it seems a little odd that Paul, who knew about his father having sex with his girlfriend, should not show the slightest interest in where the third part of the inheritance was going to.

Okay. I’m fifteen. And I think this movie sounds really interesting and I do love MM. I’ve seen him in Pride and Prejudice where he was amazing and in The Way We Live Now, where he did great as well. I’m also renting some other of his stuff. Anyway, I love the actor and I really want to see this film, but I’m a little afraid to. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some pretty risky movies with my aunt. But, being that it’s MM, I just don’t want to watch a film where I may not think of him the same anymore.

I’m afraid this is making me sound really dumb, but I just really love MM and I don’t want to see something that will scare me away from his movies forever.

I read the description of the rating and the synopsis as well and I was just wondering how "bad" it is.

I’m really good with movies. I’ve seen lots of stuff. There’s no nudity here, which for me is a plus. The movie sounds great and MM is amazing.

And I’ll most likely see it because I don’t want to pass it by, but if you guys could help me out, that’d be great. You know, I just am a little afraid. Is is something that made you think differently about him? When you think of him now, is there a different image scarred in your head?

Maybe I’m reading the synopsis wrong and not understanding it…

    Please help.

    Thanks so much you guys.

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had found the winning story Celia wrote as an article, the one involving the horses and the ocean. Is it litterally taken over from the book?, because then I could trace it down somewhere…

Id be very happy if someone could just post it here ;)

    thanks anyways!

In the scene where Paul and Andrew are talking at the river (shotgun scene) Andrew seems to hint that their dead mother was present when Celia died. I think Paul reacts to this by gasping "what" in a shocked manner. We then cut to the scene in the past where Celia is accidently killed by Andrews wife. I wasn’t sure what was going on here as I didn’t see any relevance between Andrew and Paul’s dead mother and the situation of Celia entering Andrews house and being killed. I have probably got completly mixed up and have the whole thing wrong but any help to clear this up for me would be appreciated.

There was a scene where the wife of Paul’s brother found photos of Celia. Was there something going on between her husband and Celia? And if not who took the pictures and how was the whole thing connected to the story?

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

    (Spoilers)

In the flash back at the end of the film Celia already knows that Paul’s father may be her father, however we are told that Paul’s brother tells her this in the same sequence were she dies. How can this be so?

    Another great New Zealand film.

    Just wondering,

in that scene where he picks up the chick from the bar, and she says kiss me, what was the purpose of pulling that belt out? What did that do, I’m watching it in class and studying it, and it just made no sense to me whatsoever, my whole class was confused! Haha!

So yeah, my question is, what is the belt and the point of pulling it out and putting it around his neck?

    Cheers!

I really loved this film. I found it so heartbreaking and moving that I haven’t been able to watch it again. I’ve read these boards (and some others) to clear up the ambiguities.

I think I read in one of the threads that in the book Andrew does kill Celia? I realize there are often large jumps in the creation of a screenplay, but that’s pretty huge. What happens in the book? Why the change?

    Are there any other diffrences?

If Celia already knows who her father is, what is so compelling that she goes with Andrew? Was Andrew looking for her? If she was in the will, why was wasn’t she or her mother at the reading of it? Why hadn’t she been notified?

Do you think the director/screenwriter wants to the viewer to believe Paul doesn’t know if he is the father or brother of Celia for sometime? I thought he was the father. I guess I figured he thought his dad had the picture because he was a) saving it for Paul, b) she was his granddaughter. It may not be logical now, but that’s how my mind worked during the watching.

Also, why did Paul need to see the birth certificate if he knew Celia wasn’t his child? What did he find out from it that he didn’t know before? (I remember struggling to read it on my TV screen.) Why was the birth certificate re-issued?

What kind of book is it? By that I mean, is it considered "literature"? Someone wrote that the author writes about these subjects in his other books.

Is the commentary on the UK version?

I just got an email from CDUniverse saying that this dvd is available for pre-order and will be released on November 6, 2007. So I checked Amazon, and sure enough, they have it listed, as well.

So that’s good news for us Region 1 people!

I saw this movie over two years ago at the SXSW festival and have been tempted to order the region 2 dvd for awhile.

Now maybe I can save some money and order it locally!

edit: it’s listed at $14.14 at CDUniverse, 17.99 at amazon, and 15.41 at DeepDiscount.com (with free shipping) right now.

    For your information,

The director of this brilliant film has recently announced publically that he has cancer. It’s sounds pretty serious. Apparently he had it before ‘den’, but then it went into remission. Now it is back with a vengeance.

I rate In My Father’s Den as my favourite NZ film, and i’ve seen many. I hope he is able to pull through and go on and make more.

already posted this in the comments but wouldn’t mind some views on this:

the only small point which i didn’t fully understand was the scene where celia is killed.

she has already been to paul’s house and is fully aware that she is his sister (as we see in the closing scene before she starts off down the road) so why when andrew offers her a lift and that is he is going to tell her ‘everything’ does she accept? does she not know everything at this point? or is it just the will that he is going to tell her about?

also – is andrew planning to kill celia when he brings her back to the house? what is his motive for bringing her back? any opinions on these points would be much appreciated.

The scene where Paul’s father has sex with Jackie. It was wasn’t rape, right? It didn’t seem so at least.

Then I don’t get why everyone were so upset that Paul left the town. I mean his girlfriend had sex with his father.
