A boy runs out of food and cuts pictures of food from a magazine and eats it with a knife and fork?

I’m normally more annoyed than impressed by child actors, but I was floored by Jesse Bradford’s remarkable performance as Aaron. Every line, every expression, every movement seemed genuine. Rarely have I seen a child actor give such a subtle, sensitive and completely believable performance.

Jesse should be a bigger star, but he has too much nuance and too little flash for that. This film is a remarkable document of a developing talent that continues today.

Was anyone else impressed by Jesse’s performance here?

Did anyone recognize Arletta? It’s Lauryn Hill, the rap and hip-hop singer. Though her part was small I thought it was wonderful. I loved her facial expressions.

This movie is a real gem. There were no mistakes in background with

clothes, cars, architecture, school report card, radio, etc. all in keeping

with 1933. Of course the plot and acting are superb. In some ways, the

family/social problems of The Great Depression parallel The Great

    Recession (2009) of today.

It’s nice to see a movie without explosions or car chases although

that car running downhill was thrilling enough.

Going off and leaving a child this young totally on his own – making piss-ant arrangements for the boy’s food at that restaurant and not even having any adult come and check on the boy or giving the boy any kind of instructions on who he could get hold of if some kind of problem arose.

I just wanted to put that father in the stocks in the public square after a good through horse-whipping! He made me so furious! Aaron could have died!!!!!

I’ve been waiting for this movie to be published on dvd since the late 90s, when they first started publishing dvds. Today, dvds seem to have reached their peak as far as sales and popularity, gradually being phased out. My fear is that this will never be published. And what a shame that is! This is the perfect film to give as a present to friends and family, an accessible film for just about anyone, young or old. You’d think Mr. Soderbergh, a self-claimed film lover, would scheme a way to have this small and all but forgotten gem to be re-discovered anew. After all, it’s been 16 years since its premiere. In fact, this would be a perfect criterion movie.

This really does seem to be one of those great films, or stories not many people noticed on the date of its theatrical release, and subsequently during its video-shelf life.

Does anyone remember this? I only have a dim reccolection…

There’s a scene where the boy is afraid to come out of his room b/c it’ll get locked up and he’ll be locked out with nowhere to go. The bellhop downstairs is always on the lookout for him or something…is there a key involved somewhere?

It looks like King of the Hill is going to be playing a few times this month on HDNet Movies.

    Sun, Dec 7th – 9:30 AM ET / 6:30 AM PT

    Mon, Dec 15th – 12:15 PM ET / 9:15 AM PT

    Tue, Dec 23rd – 8:15 PM ET / 5:15 PM PT

    Wed, Dec 24th – 12:00 AM ET / Tue, Dec 23rd – 9:00 PM PT

    Mon, Jan 5th – 2:15 PM ET / 11:15 AM PT

HDNet is usually known for its great HD movie quality unlike the HBOs and TNTs, so could this mean the movie was converted to HD instead of a cheap upscale? Maybe a Blu Ray release is in the works..

Either Showtime or HBO had "King of the Hill" on their HD channel a few months ago. So, it appears the transfer to HD has already been done. All that’s necessary is for the studio to OK the BluRay (and new DVD) transfers. The flip side is that a lot of older movies have been transferred to BluRay for pay movie channels, but have not yet been released in HD or re-released on DVD.

Story About the Book, the Movie and Hotchner

I read King of the Hill in the late 70’s and it was a book that really stuck with me–just wonderful. When the movie came out, I thought it was just as good (well, almost–you can never in my opinion beat out a book with any movie.) For years I had been telling myself that I had to write Hotchner about how his memoir meant so much to me. Like a lot of things in life, I kept putting it off. Then one day, a few years ago I said "enough already" the man is in his 80’s it’s now or never. So, I did, a long letter not only about my love of his book but how I had shown the film to my kids at one of the homeless shelters I work at here, in NYC. I also told him about the non-profit I worked for that has been doing marvelous work since 1866! With my kids at the shelter there were a few kids that loved to read, so I gave them used copies of King of the Hill (it is OOP BTW…sadly.)-they loved it. Well a few months went by and I did not hear from Hotch–I was a tad disapointed. However, not long afterwood, my boss called me (she knew about the letter.) My organization had just received $10,000 from "Newman’s Own" which is the organization that Newman and Hotchner partner–you know the salad dressing, the pasta sauce, etc. I guess after that, I truly believed in the "the power of the pen." It’s nice to know that Hotchner never forgot his humble beginnings.

is based on my late grandfather, robert (or bobby back in those days i guess) tyzzer. in hotchner’s book he is named billy tyzzer. anyways from what he told me, the portrayl of him was pretty accurate in the film except that 1) he did not breed canaries and 2) they had a modest amount of money but nothing extravagent like in the film. i guess if you had ANY money during the depression that made you well off.

and just so you know, even though he got his butt kicked playing marbles in the film, he ended up becoming a colonel in the marines during ww2 and was tough as nails.

This is probably a stupid question, but why is this dvd available in a PAL format ( Amazon UK ) and not NTSC? Is it because the U.S. companies that could release it don’t think it would be profitable? Probably.

I think that since Steve is so busy with current projects he should let Criterion do this one. I mean they did a great job with Schizopolis (which has an awesome cover) and re-release of Traffic (cooler cover as well). Anywho I think they’ll do justice to this wonderfully under-rated film.

if you go on amazon.com and search for king of the hill on dvd it brings up a page but says ‘this dvd is not available for release yet’ but it gives you an option to put your email on a list so amazon can contact you as soo as the dvd you want comes out, and apparently, they send of a list of how many people wanna be informed about these dvds, to the companies who make em so they know how big the demand is and work faster on the dvd…i love this film and i really want to see it on dvd so i suggest everyone who wants it out too do this and get all your friends to do it thatst way it’ll hopefully come out soon!!

I saw this movie on cable TV a few years ago (I live in Argentina) and inmediately fell in love with the characters, with a very young A.Brody and J.Krabbe as excellent as ever, with his Dad’s character waving goodbye. My favourite scene : when Aaron is starving and begins to eat the paper food. I cannot stand waiting for the DVD release of this Steven Sod gem.

    Hello everyone:

I just saw this movie today but I was really tired and I fell asleep on some of it. Can anyone please tell me what happened to this boy’s parents. I saw the part when they sent his brother away, but after that…they seemed to be doing alright. When did yis parent’s leave him and why would they do such a thing? His mother seemed to really love him…
