What happens when Tristan goes off on his worldly adventure? I know he goes to Africa and becomes a hunter, but there is one scene which I just didn’t get- it’s the shot of him screaming, being held down by men with ropes or something…

What exactly is going on here? Is he on drugs? Is he being tortured?

I’ve no idea and it’s driving me crazy.

    Any help would be great!

He is definitely suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at this point. One symptom of PTSD is night terrors. Some of which can become very violent, loud, and unnerving for those around the one suffering. My guess is he is having night terrors and his peers, fellow hunters, comrades, etc. are trying to subdue him during one of his fits/ night terrors.

Well, personally I think this score is in the top two on any film score.

The other one also belong to James Horner, the score fore Titanic.

Right or wrong? Or are they any better?

In real life, they would not put three brothers in the same outfit/squad at war. They would spread them out. And it’s kind of hard to fight a war when you are trying to protect both your brother AND your country. That’s a huge burden. Samuel should not have enlisted because then he wouldn’t be dead and Alfred wouldn’t have been injured and Brad wouldn’t have had pity sex with Susannah and married her just to make an honest woman out of her. There could have been years of "will-they-won’t-they" sexual tension between Susannah and Tristan and Susannah and Alfred. Who knows.

Right after Samuel is shot by the german troops and Tristan is pulling him off the fence.

"You’re doing good, you’re doing good."

I’ve cried I don’t know how many times. There’s something so real about what he says and how he says it to his little brother that catches me off guard every time I see it.

Those boys needed to get off the farm more because they all got married or engaged to Susannah at some point. I’m surprised the father didn’t have a go at her as well. What a slut. She slept her way through the entire family.

Ok am I the only one who felt like the character of Susanna fell a little flat?

I mean I never quite got what it was about her that made all three brothers fall for her. Sure she’s pretty and all but I never really got a sense of her personality other then the fact that she’s obsessed with Tristan and is unhappy that she can’t be with him etc.

Does she have any hobbies, likes/dislikes? I mean I understood more about Alfred and Tristan then I did about Susanna. And Susanna is a central character in the story, other then the brothers going off to war, she’s what drives the family apart and causes all the drama.

And I just would’ve liked to have gotten a glimpse of what it is that’s so amazing about her to have three men drooling over her at the same time.

    What do you think?

Samuel’s death seemed so over the top. I found it odd that two Germans took the time to set up a machine gun and procede to kill someone who was basically defenseless with… what, like 20 bullets? Did these Germans not have pistols? This is my husband’s favorite movie and he also found it odd after I pointed it out.

Was anyone else sad when the bear had his toe cut off? I only caught the first half of the movie, but it seemed to me that Tristan provoked him by bothering him then got pissed when the bear was angry. From what I recall, it may have been a tradition that he had to follow…or something…? But either way seemed a waste to hurt a bear like that. Maybe someone else can better explain it to me.

How different/worse/better do you think the movie would have been? I usually detest Brad Pitt’s performances because he pretty much seems to be the same guy only with a different occupation and haircut in most of his films. However, I thought he was brilliant in this movie.

That being said, Johnny Depp is my favorite actor and I think it’s pretty obvious he can do whatever he wants. We need more actors like him today, as long as they aren’t starring in far too many movies about pirates. The only thing is that I don’t know if he could have done the scenes where Tristan was devoid of emotion quite as well as Pitt did. Depp’s acting is too dynamic for that, whereas Pitt most of the time is pretty one-dimensional so it might have been easier for him. Plus I wouldn’t wanna take away what is probably Pitt’s best performance from him, and this is not the kind of film Depp would do anyway. It’s not weird enough. haha

    What do you guys think?

First saw this as a 21 year old college senior who had never seen a man as beautiful as Brad Pitt was at the time. Brad’s still lovely now but he was at the height of his beauty then. Good Lord. And you have to envy Susannah, who, though her fiance dies, has the two handsomest brothers in the Western Hemisphere fighting over her. What a life. Good grief.

I’ve seen the movie many times and it’s very well done. I think Alfred has the hardest role. Brad’s come a long way since then but he is very good then too. Tony Hopkins went a bit overboard with the Quasimodo impersonation. Anyway it’s realy good. Brad reminds me a bit of Heath in this.

It’s a modern epic. Lush scenery, a bit schmaltzy, but a gripping story. Holds up 15 years later. Well done.

"I had sons…but they’re all gone now. Gone forever."

Maybe that is why he had such a bond with Ludlow’s boys, because he had lost his own.
