I was kinda confused about the book. At one point Alex tells Sally to find the book. She says it was taken and he says something about "they took it… the people who don’t want their secret revealed". At the end though you see him with the book, pasting a story about Nigel’s death into it. You also see an article about the girl’s death on the page before, which looks like it was pasted in a similar way.

Why did Alex tell Sally to find the book if he had it all along? Or did he find it later? Why would he want her to find it and learn their secrets if he’s bought into the ideas and the secret brotherhood? We do know that the scene with him pasting the article about Nigel into the book happens nine months after his conversation with Sally, but I feel like he also put in the article about the girl which probably came out earlier. It also still doesn’t explain why he would want Sally to know about the secrets or try to get the book because he had already had sex with the dead girl’s corpse (so he already at least sort of believed Nigel’s ideas).

The only thing I can come up with is that, at the time, Alex was not positive of Nigel’s beliefs, and he didn’t have the book. He wanted Sally to find it either as evidence of his own innocence or so that she could convince him to turn away from Nigel’s teachings. Over the nine month period, however, he went through a rebirth, during which he aquired the book, and which culminated in his becoming completely "like minded" with Nigel.

Anyway, other thoughts on the matter? Was anyone else confused by this?

    *Spoilers*

What do you think of the end of the movie? Is Alex going to continue what Nigel was doing? Also, does anyone know if there is or is going to be a sequel to this film?

    Why are you like that?

    Like what?

Was rather enjoying this film that I had videoed from the tv when at about this point the damned tape started to jump scene-Aaaaargh!!!!!!!!!!! :o(

The film was fairly good I thought rather than fantastic & I really don’t want to buy the DVD to watch the last few minutes again & I wonder if anyone could be kind enough to let me know what exactly happened from the point of the film "nine months later" to the end.

    Many thanks in advance!

Did Nigel actually have sex with his mother? Or was it simply Nigel wanting it to seem, to his father, as if that’s what they were doing? I’ve watched it several times now and am still confused by this. I know Nigel considered his mother his own Maraclea, so it’s easy to see that Nigel would willingly have sex with her, but it doesn’t seem as if she would go along with this and actually have sex with him.

Four of us saw this film together today, here in Dunedin as part of our World Cinema Showcase. We split down the middle on a rather fundamental point, so I wonder what others think.

Two of us thought that Alex was completely evil and lied his way through the entire movie. Two of us thought he was telling the truth, Nigel had killed everyone but thanks to the gestalt theory that he had talked about, Alex took over as his successor (and thus went back for the skull nine months later and adopted other habits we had come to associate with Nigel).

    1) The whole religious theme (Jack, Marieclaira). What was that all about?

    2) Why did Nigel kill all those people?

    3) Who was the woman in the photos? Nigel’s mom (or step-mom? What was that all that about?

    4) Why did Alex take Susan’s head and why didn’t he cover the tomb?

    5) Is Alex to blame or not, I mean, was he lying to the psychologist cause in the end she says "this sick f*uck" or something referring I suppose to Alex or did Nigel’s spirit got into Alex?

Sorry for so many questions but I was really confused by all of the events in this movie.

Can I get a job as a reviewer??? I know how to use google and I can understand this film really easily and I can tell you Tom is hot and should have been Edward and I wont just rehash other peoples reviews.

Below is a link to an article.

    http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/reviews/review.asp?Index=6153&User=3 5366&Page=2

    It says:

“Not really sure why any of the motivations had to revolve around the Knights Templar ………..People are murdered for apparently little reason except something unexplained in the bigger picture. The murder of Nigel’s parents. The murder of schoolgirl Susan Mueller, who is supposed to be Alex’s first love (even though they’ve just met).”

In the film the character of Nigel is a psychopath. It is basic knowledge that psychopaths have obsessive personalities. Nigel loves history. His obsession is the Templar, myth of Maraclea. (Not entirely surprising as both his and his friend Alex’s father’s are members of a Masonic lodge, which is steeped in history linking back to the Knights Templar.) He decides to

re-enact the Myth with Alex – the guy he is obsessing about. Thus the murders. That’s probably more reason than your average psychopath?

“…or why both boys parents (and the investigating policeman) had to be in a Masonic lodge of some kind, but I’m betting that Gregory J. Read had not long read Dan Brown’s bestseller on holiday or something.”

I checked this out cause I wondered myself but the screenplay was nominated for an AWGIE Monte Miller award in Australia in 1997. The Da Vinci Code was published in 2003.

    http://www.australiantelevision.net/awards/awgie1997.html

“And finally the murder or suicide of Nigel. What? They’re supposed to be like minds and linked via some kind of gestalt and he just dies. What kind of destiny is that? It makes the referencing of the psychopaths I mentioned in the introduction a bit laughable, but they’re clearly referenced in the film during Toni Collette’s limited screentime.”

The myth of Maraclea revolves around attaining ultimate power for all eternity. I cannot work out why it is confusing to understand the link Nigel makes between death and eternity?

“Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t make it beyond your intellectual capabilities”

I don’t imagine it’s intended to be beyond any one’s intellectual capabilities I find it helps not to multi-task while watching.

I’m a bit confused by an australian Films/Screen Yorkshire colaboration.

So evidently, large parts of this film were shot in Yorkshire, UK. However, which bits are Australian? – Why are the 2 lead adult characters played by australians putting on English accents? Were the police station and train scenes filmed in Australia?

Because the characters in thi movie are so amazing this could be a very long thread.

I’m yet to decie but leaning towards Alex. Because or though he was an over-privilaged, arrogant *beep* he was still (I think) driven mad by Nigel, which means he must have had a moral centre of some sort. Unlike Nigel who was simply a psychopath. That’s not without it’s sympathies but we don’t know how he got that way or why so it’s harder to empathise. Whereas with Alex we know exactly why.

That’s what I was thinking throughout this whole movie. Not exactly the same, but pretty much the same concept, in my opinion. It has been a while since I’ve seen Frailty though. I may be wrong.

The movie bored me, to be honest. Not horrible, but by no means good. I liked Frailty better, but even that wasn’t so good.

Can anybody shed light on what "bancor" is? I had thought perhaps it was a place where some sort of sport was played (based on her use of the word "match"), but can’t seem to find anything relevant.

I have been wanting to see this movie since it was announced. First because it starred Tom Sturridge then later as more info came out because it actually looked like a worth while orginal movie. It’s been on dvd in the US for awhile but I just got my hands on it through Netflix.

It’s been living in my dvd player until I can afford to buy it which brings me to my point. I was showing it to my friend last night who loved it as much as me when it hit me like a brick, where is the fandom for this movie?

I have seen fandom’s form around terrible movies. Where can I go to talk with other fans and read fanfiction. The fact that this movie is not available in book form is very annoying however I think I could be satisfied with some good fiction.

Has anyone written any, is anyone willing? There are so many scenes that could be explored further, also the strange attraction they shared. It would be amazing in written form.

The film was amazing and Nigel and Alex were great characters. It still confuses me why Alex would turn to Nigel’s ways after he had been so against them to begin with, but my only explanation for this odd change is that during the nine months he read the book over and began seeing sense in everything that twisted Nigel had told him. Creepy, eh? And as for where can you watch the whole movie, YOU TUBE! is your answer :) That’s where I just watched it, it’s stuck in my mind and I loved it!
