I don’t know about anyone else, but I was angry at the ending! I mean, Theresa didn’t even get a chance to really have him for long (she went through being cheated on and now her lover goes and dies on her in a freak accident). Poor woman! His first wife had it easy, and yet we didn’t sympathize with her as much as Theresa. I swear, Catherine missed him and killed him off so he wouldn’t bang another woman! :p

Also, if he flew to Chicago to visit Theresa and her son the first time, why did he have to sail the second time!? And doesn’t this guy watch the weather channel or check sailing conditions before he pushes off the dock? If he were 20 years old maybe I can understand him haphazardly sailing off to Chicago. 40-year-olds tend to be more cautious (especially experienced sailors).

Haha, I’m so mean. :) I enjoyed the movie, though. It was sweet!

I have read about half of them and am looking for a good one to read next. What are your favorite books by Nicholas Sparks?

    So far mine are:

    1. The Notebook

    2. Dear John

    3. Nights in Rodanthe

    4. A Walk to Remember

    5. A Bend in the Road

I fell in love with this book. So I ran out to get the movie and I just cannot get into it. There are just too many differences from the book. Any one else feel this way?

Seems rather stupid to me & spoiled the story that a veteran sailor who had been sailing all his life would go out in a storm like that. He could of put the journey off to the following day no problem. I liked this film years ago but now it seemed too long, too slow & a silly ending.

I saw this movie years ago but to this day I think it’s the only time I ever saw lightning portrayed realistically, with a delay before the boom. It’s part of the story here, I know, but it’s a grouchy-geek peeve of mine that lightning and thunder are always simultaneous in movies, which unless you’re actually hit, you ain’t gonna see, and probably not even then. Have film-makers not ever seen storms before? OK, that one is rhetorical, my real question is, does anybody know of other films where lightning and thunder are shown accurately?

I really liked this movie and (like everyone else here) thought Newman was magnificent, Robin Wright Penn was v-e-r-y alluring and …… Cosner was just himself as always!

I just had an extremely twisted thought about the following reported goof.

"When Garret is typing the last letter to Catherine to tell her about Theresa, the first word he types is "It". When the letter is read in voiceover, it starts out with the word "My"."

I admit its unlikely, but MAYBE just MAYBE this was not a goof but a deliberate clue in the movie to a more perverse possibility? This is that the Newman character had scrapped an original (more ambiguous) note typed by Cosner and replaced it with a retyped note which declaring love for Robin Wright Penn. If I was Newman, I would have wanted to let her down gently too!

Call me unromantic but it’s kinda fun to consider the more far-fetched angles…

This movie is not on my list of great favorites, but I found it to be pretty watchable.

I’m not a big Costner fan, but he does a good job with this part.

I was surprised to see Robbie Coltrane..loved him as ‘Cracker’.

But, the one standout performance..and reason to watch this movie..is that of the beautiful(even at 74)Paul Newman.

Every scene he is in is flawless. He is so real. He had me laughing and crying, sometimes at the same time.

At one point, I thought I saw ‘Hud’ appear for a few seconds–when he is ‘flirting’ with Theresa.

Paul Newman was one of the greats..just don’t make them like that anymore.

The scenery is gorgeous. Some of it looked to beautiful to be real. I liked the movie alot but hated the ending when costner died. And Mr. Paul Newman’s performance was outstanding as in all his films!

I counted three letters from Garrett to Catherine: there was the one she found in the bottle when she was jogging, then there was one that came in with the "mail" to the newspaper from some anonymous person, then there was one that was faxed over. THEN, at the end, Theresa says that there were three letters, yet one of the three was a letter from Catherine to Garrett. I AM SO CONFUSED! Would love to be enlightened. Thanks, Pamela

Maybe it’s just me, but Garrett is a widower who loses his pregnant wife; Costner looks too old to be a new father. Robin’s character has a what 8 year-old? That would put her in her 20’s in first having her son, Garrett should have been played by a younger actor, there are plenty of brooding actors to choose from, Hollywood is loaded with choices.

Paul Newman was the best part of the movie. I so related with the argument between Garrett and his father when Garrett said, "it was none of his business," as a parent I realize children do not see that when our child suffers, we suffer. We want our children to be happy, and most of all, want them to find their soul mate to keep them happy, give them love, maybe even children so they can learn there is someone more important that they are, help them to keep growing as people.

Maybe Costner helped produce the movie so he got the part, but he was too old, just my opinion.

If the film takes place on the Outer Banks of the Carolinas, why was it shot in Maine?

Many of the scenes sure look like Maine, and the credits at the end thank the Sate of Maine.

I loved the scene, where Garret finds Theresa’s jacket after she’s left and doesn’t know what to do or say.

His father Dogde (Paul Newman) helps him out: "Okay, you’ll be Theresa and I’ll be you". Dogde hands the jacket to Garret and says: "Here’s your jacket!"

    – that’s so funny and very Paul Newman!

Based on the book description of Theresa, who did you picture to play her as you were reading? In the book, she had straight dark hair that fell to her shoulders, and brown eyes. I was thinking maybe Mary Louise Parker, but I definitely didn’t picture Robin Wright Penn in the role of Theresa as I was reading this book. To me, she just looked too similiar to Catherine. Any thoughts?

I know most may disagree but that brief scene in the diner at night. Wow…that’s what legends are made of. I could see it in his eyes…the emotion….it was so….I don’t know…real.

"Special Features" on the DVD informs there are five hidden bottle icons which lead to behind the scenes footage. I have found only three so far. On "Select Languages" there is a light aqua bottle shape on Paul Newman’s plaid shirt, below his arm.

On "Special Delivery" (found under "Special Features") just above the word "FEATURES".

"Cast and Crew" (found under "Special Features") to the right of Paul Newman’s name. These bottles only appear when your mouse falls on top of one. Please list any others you have found.
