Ok, I’m just a little confused. This movie takes places during the 1980 winter games, but that doesn’t make sense. The Olympics, both summer and winter as far as I know are played every four years. So if these games took place in 1980, then the next would be 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, (but 1996 was the year of the summer games in Atlanta where that guy bombed the place) 2000, 2004, now here’s where I’m confused. The last winter games were in 2006 because very close to when the 06 games started, I quit a job. How is that?? Did they skip a year or two?? Please help, it’s really bugging me.

anyone find russell’s portrayal of Herb Brooks way over the top? russell is/was a fine actor, but this part just wasnt for him. it seemed forced most of the time and didnt suit his temperament at all. denzel washington did a far better job as a Boone in remember the titans.

why is everybody whose not from america so angry about this movie. Nowhere do they say this team was better than the canadians who knocked off the russians at the worlds. nowhere do they diminish the soviets, they give them there much deserved kudos. portraying Viktor Tikhonov as panicky during the last five mins was accurate, not a way to demean him. if u watch the original game when it starts getting to crunch time the man is pacing and has no idea what to do, they were so good they never had to worry bout playing from behind.

let us have this, this will never happen again. were not a hockey nation, this year was the first time ever americans went 1,2 in the draft, 44 years after the draft began. the 80 team earned their piece of history and we’ll glorify it just as every nation glories its successes. it truely was amzing tho, everyone knows that soviets would wipe the floor with them if it was a best of series or even if they just played 100 games after that night they’d probably win all 100. and it happened during a really shi#$y time for the US. its almost like that olympics came right out of a movie script, not the other way around.

So make a movie about the summit series team or how dominate the soviets were, they should they deserve it. but dont get pissed off cuz we glorify a huge win.

Canada defeated Russia eight years earlier in the 1972 Summit Series, which is something that is all but forgotten. Yet when the United States accomplishes the same thing it it is considered to be a miracle and one of the greatest moments in sports history.

    I just don’t get it.

I saw this movie awhile ago, I don’t really remember it that much but I remember when I was watching it thinking all the guys were SO hot. Seriously wanted to make me go to some more hockey games in real life, so I could pick up some sexy hockey men. Next time I get paid I’m gonna buy this so I can drool over the hot pieces of ass in this film.

Everyone in my class for mass communications did a huge project on this. We went to Lake Placid for the 25th anniversary in 2005 for the dedication of the Herb Brooks Arena and met a bunch of the guys including Mike Eruzione, Jimmy Craig, Mark Johnson, and Patty Brooks and her kids. It turned out to be a few of the most incredible days of my life! And when I was giving my presentation at the end of the year about Herb Brooks’ coaching techniques and theories, Eruzione called during the middle of it and we had a conference call. It was so cool.. =)

Here’s a link based on what we did.. My professor made this site and retired after we did this. There are some pretty cool videos posted, too.

It almost had a rival of epic value with the US/Canada game the other night.. especially 30 years after.. oh well.. I guess there’s 2014! Go Team USA! =)

I’m a big Flyers fan, and I watch the Flyers vs Red Army game whenever its on TV, how much of the USA’s game was based on the Flyers approach to the Red Army game, and how much was Herb Brooks’ geneus?

Instead of having "Dream On" (which is very brooding and ponderous, anyway; strange for a heroic story), isn’t it OBVIOUS which song should’ve been used for the title of this story at that time period?

"We Are the Champions" – Queen!

Major missed opportunity, if you ask me!

The scene where Herb makes them run the drill over and over again until they realize they are a team is my favorite in the movie, and one of the most inspirational in any sports movie. That scene alone makes the movie!

I wasn’t alive to witness this game in first person, but I am a fan of the Flyers. As a fan of the Flyers I watched the 1790’s superseries where the Flyers beat the Russians. I am not a coach, but wouldn’t someone want to repeat what the Flyers did if they wanted to win a championship? Yet the Flyers get no credit during the movie. Can someone please shed some light on this. It bothers me.

I’m from the US, and frankly hockey doesn’t interest me in the slightest. Nothing against the game, just not my thing. I personally prefer soccer, but I was wondering if hockey was a really big deal everywhere else in the world (Kinda like how baseball is big in America, is Hockey Europe and Canada’s baseball?)

Last Friday, I was lucky enough to go to the Winter Classic at Fenway Park. The game was awesome and THANKFULLY, my B’s pulled it out in OT. But before the game, there was a huge expo going on across the street. In 1 of the tents was the chance to meet Jim Craig. This is where I became extra lucky. Because underneath my Bruins sweater, was a new 1980 Team USA replica sweater that I had got for Christmas.

I was going to peel off the B’s sweater to show the USA sweater when they announced the Olympic hockey roster at the end of the game. But, there he was. Jim Craig signing anything anybody gave him. My turn came, and the first thing Jim said was "Ha ha ha… I love your jersey."

Nicest guy you could meet. He talked to me while our pictures were being taken. And then he signed the sweater and signed and personalized a bunch of other stuff for me to give to my family.

    Great guy to talk to.

I am trying to track down a Canadian (made for TV?) title from late 80’s/early 90s –

I cannot remember anything more than it’s kinda like the "youngblood" story- but with a younger teenage (darkhaired) boy having to relocate to small town with his single mom /younger sister family & has huge ice hockey talent & so proves himself through his skills in this new place…

oh – there’s a local girl teen romance too. I THINK (from my vaguest of teen memories?! forgive me) that the young actor who played the RobLowe/young hockey star type role was a handsome Canadian teen star (maybe a real ice hockey talent?)-

But that’s ALL i recall about film & have so far had no luck googling about for info- any ideas anyone?

cheers for any leads/input to help!

Herb Brooks’ speech before the Russian game is the best "motivational speech" in sports movie history. The other decent sports movies of our time, "Rocky," "Invinceable," "The Rookie," We are the Titans," "Friday Night Lights," "Hoosiers," "Coach Carter," "Gridiron Gang," and "Rudy," all feature lame seminal-moment big-game speeches.

This movie delivers. It’s the best pre-game speech ever. It’s the icing on the cake for Kurt Russell’s best performance ever. It seals his credibility as an accomplished actor, not just a marketable one.

He "nailed" Herb Brooks in every way. The accent. The mannerisms. The attitude. The skating "coach glide."

It’s rare when an actor can truly embody a character. Kurt Russell went above and beyond. His portrayal of Coach Brooks is the best legacy and "homage" anyone could leave for the late coach.

I’ve always thought Kurt Russell was an underrated actor. Maybe because he came up through the Disney studio as a child actor…few shake that stigma as adults.

But he’s the "real deal." An amazing artiist, and since JFK Jr. died, the male torch-bearer of era. Kurt represents the "best and brightest" of my generation. Baby Boomer guys who were born in the ’50s. I was born on the same day as his partner Goldie Hawn. November 21, 1959.

Scorpio on the cusp of Sagitarius. Whatever that means.

Kurt Russell is like a fine wine. He gets better as he ages.

Another coverage of the same story is the HBO documentary, "Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the US Olypmpic Hockey Team" (2001)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276918/

It goes into the social/political/economic environment at the time, which explains why this victory was so important to the American people. The economy was in the toilet. In 1979, Iran had taken a bunch of our citizens hostage and the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, and the US was powerless to change either situation. It was a very down time, and "beating the Russians" really did restore national pride.

There are also plenty of interviews with Herb Brooks, players including Eruzione and Craig, Russian players, Al Michaels the commentator who uttered the famous line from the title, and others.

And great footage from the team’s Olympic games, including the one against the Soviets of course. But I was almost as moved by the very first game, against Sweden. The US was down 2-1, and if we had lost the first game, we would have been pretty much out right from the beginning. But in the last minute of the game, we tied it. As a sports writer says, that goal was the biggest one of the Olympics for our team.

By the way, I can’t understand IMDB Recommendations. This one should be included.

You must be the change you seek in the world. — Gandhi
