i’ve only seen this movie (and read the play) twice and that was a few years ago so maybe i don’t remember the movie or play as well as i should before posting this, but, i think Kenneth Branagh ruined Benedick. i read the play before seeing the movie and the Benedick i imagined from the play was very different from how Kenneth played him. idk, he seemed too lively and goofy for me when, while reading, i pictured him as a more cold, dark, serious, stolid jerk. but, i may just remember or had read the play incorrectly, idk. BUT, i also hated him as Hamlet (and i read that before seeing the movie too. and this all happened just this year). i found him too dorky, lively and animated in that movie too. i pictured Hamlet as sort of a brooding teenager, not Kenneth Branagh. kenneth’s obnoxious acting annoys the crap out of me. why doesnt anyone else feel this way???

So… for our drama class in school, we have to study Shakespeare for a term and find a Shakespearian play that we would like to create a perfomance (5-7 mins) off…

Our group went into the ‘mash-up’ and ‘adaptation’ category and we tried for weeks to think of a funny and clever way to bring the play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ to life in seven minutes… and we came out with the result ‘Much Ado About Star Wars’….

Now I have publicly humiliated ol’ Will on stage by replacing Hero and Claudio with mannequins playing motionless droids, Don John is now Darth John (an evil sith in a wheelchair), Dogberry is a flippin’ remote controlled robot and Benedick and Beatrice are two lovers that happen to be both played by males.

    Sorry Shakespeare.

Seriously, you couldn’t find a better Shakespearan actor anywhere?

Sean Bean would have been perfect to cast! And yet he’s not in it at all. Or heck, why not Eric Bogosian? Or Al Pacino?

You cast all these great actors- Robert Sean Leonard, Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, yourself- yet you had to put in Keanu?

I was watching this today in my literature class and when Denzel popped up I was seriously confused. It’s bad enough that they are speaking with British accents living in Italy but somehow or another a black guy got in the mix? Come on now! And then they casted Keanu Reeves as his brother. What world do these people live in. Denzel acted perfectly but the casting choice was strange especially when casting Keanu Reeves as Don John.

This movie had alot of werid casting choices but I think Micheal Keaton was perfect as Dogberry.

If you had actually read the play…then you would know that Don John is Don Pedro’s BASTARD brother! Hence why it was a good choice to make them different races. This way it was an easy fact to see.. Next time fully read the play!

I actually had to put the subtitles on to understand what he was saying. There is some to-be-expected over the top acting (*cough*RobertSeanLeonard*cough*)… but dear Lord, Keaton was just horrible.

I didn’t find him funny, I didn’t even find him comprehensible. It was like they spliced his part in from another movie (Beetlejuice??!) … he seemed out of place, incredibly forced and just flat out awful.

this was one of the less realistic of Shakespeares plays. Everyone lives happily ever after, forget what the guy who supposedly loves you says about your honor, and just go back to him without him ever apologizing or doing something to win back your love. Claudio turned his back on her real quick. Maybe it was Seans acting that Claudio didnt even seem disturbed or affected after hearing of Heros death. I liked Benedick the most. Claudio was a weak whiny flighty overly emotional boy who is not psychologically ready for a real relationship. Its just silly how all of them are dancing around forgetting how shallow Claudios love was. I could see Claudio having another tantrum with another misunderstanding, and slapping Hero around.

During the reveling sequence Benedick yells at Beatrice for abusing him and runs away saying, "I cannot endure my lady tongue!" After that Don Pedro teases Beatrice about "putting him down."

After that Beatrice has a short speech about Benedick and lending her heart to him, "a double heart for his single one." Were they involved before the beginning of the play? I have never been able to interpret this speech completely.

I thought they were okay. Not as bad as Keanu Reeves.

But I can see why they got critisized when faced next to such greats as Ken Branagh and Emma Thompson and Denzel Washington.

I love and enjoyed this movie immensely! I really dont care if anyone found it lacking; I saw it as it must have been presented when it first opened for Queen Elizabeth, as a play of love, loyalty, dejectedness, revenge, and jest.

I felt for the characters as i think you are intended to feel for them, if you have an open heart. I used my suspension disbelief, that i believe is why i enjoy somay movies. it works for you when you dont bring all the movies you have seen these actors in with you as you go on your celluliod journey.

its a short trip, you dont need the excess baggage ;-P

    but thats just my opinion, i could be wrong B-}

    ok,

now you probly wondering why i think the sould mack a sequal to a play without a sequal; well someone took the time to write a very good one which i think you check out and tell me if you agree. i’m sure you just might. The name of The play/book is: The Devil’s Bride

its writen by Joan Silsby you can get it at amazon and i tell you its worth the read

I myself could not put it down until i had it finished and in my minds eye all the characters were stil cast the same, with an addition or two ;-P

downright sexy, manly and commanding, a real prince. Too bad there was no girl for him. The scence where he offers himself to Beatrice and she so kindly turns him down, as being too much above her, was very nicely done.

    Very well acted ensemble piece.

Keaton’s performance put me off the first time I saw it. It was funny the next time. Dogberry is supposed to be a foolish pompous, yet withal well meaning fellow. Keaton gave it a novel twist by making him somewhat crazy. But he retained all the rest of it at the same time. I didn’t like the pretending to be on horses bit, though.

Beside the fact that Keanu Reeves craped up, it is an amazing movie. It had awsome actors. My favorite would’ve had to been Kate Beckensale and Denzel Washington. Kate was too good, and she is so pretty and Denzel played the role so well. Me, having read it, memorizing it, seen the play, and seen the movie, think it deserves an Oscar of some kind.
