I don’t remember watching a Bollywood film and recalling scene after scene from one Hollywood film or another like I did when I saw Om Shanti Om. Farah Khan has taken charba films to a whole new level. Congrats Farah!

Okay, since I’m an American who didn’t start watching Indian films until recently, there are, of course, several references in OSO that I don’t understand.

But could someone please explain the "Mind it" scene to me. That’s the only one I haven’t been able to figure out on my own, LOL. I have absolutely no idea what’s going on there with the "mind it" and the "enna rascala". =)

    Thank you! =)

I’m new to Bollywood films. Om Shanti Om is the first film that I’ve seen. I don’t think a lot of Bollywood films are released in the States. I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was superb. I saw it on Youtube and the English translation subtitles were not very good. There were scenes that were not translated at all, but I was able to catch on and even understand some of the language though I’ve never taken lessons. Anyway, all of the actors were excellent, especially the actor who played Om. He has an incredible singing voice. Since I am new to Bollywood movies, I don’t know what to see next. Would someone please recommend some Bollywood movies that are very good. The story, songs, plot, actors, etc., were great in this film – so something similar would be great. I’m open to suggestions. Do you mind giving a brief summary of the ones you recommend? Please recommend ones with good English translations or subtitles. Does the DVD of Om Shanti Om have good English subtitles? I wasn’t sure if the Youtube version I saw was someone’s attempt at a good English translation (subtitles) or if that was in fact what is on the DVD. I’m probably going to buy it from, but wanted to check on the subtitles first. Thanks for your help – can’t wait to view some more great Bollywood films.

this film was such a hack

was fun to see this parady of 70s films in first half but thats it

OK why this movie sucked and Karan Arjun was a million times better

    1) in the second half we see Om reborn with the exact same name… thats taking it too far.. in Karan Arjun Karan and Arjun looked the same but with different names and were born separate and far away from their old lives and with different names… this guy born in the same industry, same name, same looks… how the *beep* did no body EVER recognize him? These guys KILLED the original OM wouldn’t they have at least remembered the guys face and thought? wow how odd..

    2) the flashbacks. In Om Shanti Om, how Om comes to realize his past life was done so poorly it was laughable. One or two stops to the movie set or whatever and suddenly he just rememberes and accepts everything like oh yeah… no explination necessary. In Karan Arjun, we see both guys have had these recurring flashbacks throughout their lives which is very believable… also both are very hesitant to believe but only come to believe when the odds are so astronomical they must accept rebirth… In OSO this was seriously doone so badly… it was ludicrous…

    3) parents. Didn’t Om feel like a bit of a douchebag pretty much hauling the old past life family along after accepting what had happened and shunning his real family? In Karan Arjun the delima was handled well in that both were without either parent by the time they came to accept what had happened. no emotional delima. seriously what *beep*

    4) the villian. No offense but Arjun Rampal just isn’t that scary. OK ok he killed his wife thats horrible, but we are not gut wrenching afraid of this guy. He seriously seems like a sickly little prick. In Karan Arjun we have this entire family of *beep* with Amrish Puri as the terrifying ruthless leader of the family. Who wouldn’t be afraid of that guy and his eye bulge trick when he gets mad?

    5) the love interest.

the love interest in this movie was flat and ridiculous. How can you feel for Om, a stalker, even more so than the usual staker-like characters that SRK plays? First off, Shanti is married too! What’s wrong with her, going around meeting up with Om under darkness and leading him on when she’s married and pregnant right? wtf. He’s simply an obsessed, crazy fan. In Karan Arjun we really feel for Kajol and Shah Rukh. Of course, great chemistry. But the love interest is not there properly in this film and it’s what the whole film is really based on. It’s baseless. they never properly fall in love either… obviously she’s married all ready!

the only and I mean the ONLY thing that was decent about this over KA is the fact that they had this Om being afraid of fire. Really smart. He died from fire right? Nothing like that in Karan Arjun really. Oh yeah, and he was living his dream from past life. That was cool. That would have been nice to see in Karan Arjun, both are living what their dream lives were…

Is it actually credited as an official remake of Karz? The song is there in the begining and the plot is a complete rip?

(yes it’s a chemistry joke so sue me!)

An argument with my brother in law against our wives (sisters can be so stubborn sometimes!)

In the final scene when OK and Sandy hug, is it a romantic hug suggesting they will be together thereafter or is it more of a hug of relief on both of their parts, and perhaps a more brotherly sisterly relation that develops?

    Comments please!

Why does a powerful and influential superstar like shahrukh has to dish out something so nonsensical and illogical as OSO? At the end of the movie, there are only 2 sequences that stayed with me- Awards ceremony and the Stars song.

Good performances come from Shreyas, Deepika and Akshay Kumar. I chuckled when Akshay reacts on not getting the award. It stays with you. I also liked the dialogues- "Rahul. Naam to suna hoga.". But thats it. Overall, the movie did not work for me

I wonder if SRK has seen his own performance and realized how he has grossly overacted and hammed, specially in the second half. Sure it can be argued that due to the theme of the movie, he was supposed to overact and ham. But I have seen better performances in the same genre of movies which are so restrained and controlled that they land a sense of believability to their characters and make us laugh. I expected a lot better from a seasoned actor like him. But I guess the problem is that he is not an actor anymore, he is just a star. He does not want to act like his character but he wants the character to behave like shahrukh khan- the star.

I have no problem with Shahrukh doing a Don. I even can tolerate Paheli from his own production. But I want him to do something more meaningful and go to the next level. Its high time for him. Probably try something from heart(not just for box office) as Aamir is with Taare Zameen Par. I dont care how TZP will fare. It might even be a flop but at least Aamir is doing something that he believes in.

I am just telling my opinions as a normal person with middle class mentality. I can’t really argue with those fans who worship SRK blindly and cant see his flaws. I have no problems if they think that OSO is a landmark in SRK’s career, a revolution in the history of Indian film industry and a milestone in the whole World of Cinema. But I am sure that they know its not and SRK really needs to try something different.

I am sure that SRK fans will say look at the fantastic box office figures and collection around the world. I am sure that the movie is a big hit. But i feel that its fraud and cheating when you are making money by selling something which is lower than the expectations of the buyer. OSO is way lower than what SRK made us to expect from the movie. I definitely feel cheated.

I am a fan of SRK as a personality. He is charming and has charisma. But lets face it- he is not a great actor. Of all his career, I have liked Yes Boss(great comic timing), DDLJ(who does not like it) and Swades(honest performance). I think Chak De India’s real hero was the script and dialogues and even if there was a lesser star, the movie would have been a hit.

I loved the part where the main guy said he would be a better actor…too bad he didn’t mean in real life. in the 70’s we see on the premire of Dreamy Girl and Shanti Priya doing the "ek chutki sindoor" scene on screen at the theatre, therefore its part of the dreamy girl movie.

later in the future when were watching the screening of the new remake Om Shanti Om we see Dolly doing the "ek chutki sindoor" scene?

I know that Om clearly love Shanti, but did she love him? It seems like he was melting her heart, but at the same time the final song mentions that she had already "given her heart away" to somebody else…so do you think she ever would have loved Om? Or would it just have been a friendship? It hardly seems fair that the one guy for her was this villain who killed her.

I just can’t help wondering if Shanti really was the only woman for Om, and then whether or not their spirits will ever be "together" or something–they looked at each other so tearfully before she disappeared. I really thought that she would be reincarnated too so they could be together…it seems almost unfair that only he gets a second shot. Or is Shanti’s fate really just to be a lonely (though avenged) ghost? And if it is, do Om and Sandy end up together instead…? But then I have to wonder if he loves Sandy because she reminds him of Shanti, or because he should have ended up with her anyhow.

    Aaaaagh…so many questions!

before I say anything, let me just say that I was well aware that the film is not supposed to be serious, and that all the over acting and drama was done for spoofiness. I also would like to add that I found this formula very entertaining in Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na- but I just didn’t find it as entertaining here. There were a few scenes that I did laugh, but overall, this film lacked the charm of a good masala entertainer. I just could not find all the over acting and stuff funny the way that I did in MHN. I don’t know why…and unlike MHN, I just found the film moved too slowly. I was hoping for an all out masala entertainer, but I just wasn’t entertained all that much.

I’d heard such great things about this movie…I was hoping to watch it and give it a great score, but I don’t think it deserves more than a 7/10, tops…

This has really been bothering me personally. Why was Aishwarya Rai not in the Deewangi Deewangi song? I mean, practically every other star appeared in the song but not Aishwarya Rai, who is the most famous and well-known on an international level actress? It didn’t make sense, I thought it was a huge disappointment that she didn’t appear in the song or make any sort of cameo in the film. I’m bewildered at how they could not include such a huge star as her in the film or if she herself did not choose to appear in the song then why in the world not? What’s wrong with her? Does anyone know the reason for her absence. Myabe this is not such a big deal, the "Deewangi Deewangi" was absolutely out of this world beyond awesome and this was an incredible film that deserves all the success if not more that it has received but I would have just loved it had Aishwarya also made an appearance in the film at some point too, it just wasn’t the same.

I personally believe Om Shanti Om deserved the award for best music in the filmfare awards.

Although Guru was good, it was inconsistent. There were two incredible songs (Tere Bina & Barso Re), and then the rest were either pretty good or mediocre.

Om Shanti Om, on the other hand had a few absolutely brilliant songs (main agar kahoon, ajab si), a number of great songs (jag soona, deewangi, dhoom tana), and maybe one or two decent/mediocre songs (dard-e-disco, dastaan-e…).

While I am a big fan of A.R. Rahman, and did certainly enjoy the music of Guru, I believe Om Shanti Om had a much better soundtrack all in all. Anyone else agree with me?

I’m not saying that Om Shanti Om should have necessarily won, just that it would have been a better choice than Guru.
