It wasn’t original or special, but I did still like the effort. I especially appreciated the role reversal of us meeting the "aliens" on their planet in their own 50s. I have minor nitpicks as he title makes no sense, unless I missed something. And using Gary Oldman as a voice actor also makes no sense. It’s a nice movie that can keep many generations entertained.

The male aliens all wear tops with no pants and the female aliens all have dresses or skirts on.

I know the aliens were stuck in the 50’s which explains all the females in dresses, but why no pants for the guys?

Kids and retarded adults will see this this movie and be like "I KNEW IT! Area 51 is full of Aliens"… Which is so far from the truth. If I were still a kid, and saw this movie, I would be pretty convinced Area 51, whether I found out about the base sometime in the near future, would be a base housing aliens. In truth, we should all know Area 51 is not an alien housing base, it’s a jet and plane base. It would have been a lot nicer if this movie was called something different.

Overall I enjoyed the movie it was cute and funny but some of the product placement ticked me off

    1. There should have been no "VW" bus and no advertisement for Kellog’s cerial on the back of the magazine, how the hell can another planet have the same BRAND NAMES as Earth? Same language is fine a story needs to be told Star Trek did that too but the same BRAND NAMES?

    2. "Rover" should NOT have killed that alien bug that looked kind of like a scorpion, yes I know it was just a bug but to me an important point this movie was trying to make was that the astronaut (and by extension the "Rover" since it was his "servant" for lack of a better term) were peaceful and gentle and making sure NOT to harm the bug would have done a better job of showing that.

    3. Raining rocks was a bit much, yes its an alien world but come on, and the antigravity objects like hamburgers, other planet does not mean laws of physics change. Plus the "alien" dog was downright creepy, a better way in my opinion to do an "alien" dog would be just to alter some physical features compared to Earth dogs maybe an extra eye or some other difference in body feature.

There was a scene at the beginning of this movie where an alien is in a room with scientific equipment. He is reading a magazine and the radar screen starts blinking because of the incoming craft.

This scene made me think of a movie I saw where two human males are in a room with scientific equipment and the screen starts beeping or blinking because of an alien craft or something. The two try to determine what to do because nothing like that had ever happened. One even states that the only reason he took this job is because he knew he would never have to do anything because he didn’t believe in aliens.

What movie am I thinking of? It’s driving me crazy.

I saw this film because I thought it was a great concept for a film, I mean, there are SO many places to go with the story.. and they took the worst possible path.

The animation was top notch, you can tell they spent some dough, but wow, with such a great potential, the writing was downright awful. I checked out the Writer and what is obvious is that he is not talented when writing alone, notice on films of any level of success he wrote with partners (the Shrek films there were like 5 writers), so he works best in a group, but is over the top and cliche flying solo.

The first 15 minutes were just simply story development at it’s most infantile stage… and boring. I found myself looking at my watch about 30 minutes in thinking ‘how much time is left in this thing?’ and looking over at my girlfriend only to discover that she was taking a nice nap.

Oh and I know people will say ‘it’s a kids movie’… ok, yeah, a kids movie, but with a reference to a guys d*** as an ‘antenna’??? Seriously?? In a kids animated film? Yeah, I had a problem with that. And it had a few other inappropriate quips for a kids film.. Shrek has ‘adult’ humor, but it was clever and not so blatant… this just didn’t work on any level for me in the story, and it’s just a shame too.

Anyhow, just really disappointing because it was such a great concept for an animated film and it is an opportunity wasted.

Eighty percent of success is showing up. ~Woody Allen

So they have the short alien saying the barcode number on the candy bar says "Surrender or die", but then in other scenes there are signs in English clearly displayed, like the group of ladies having a tea party with a banner that clearly says "Tea Party" behind them. Doesn’t make sense.

The Rover should not have smushed the cute little alien lizard. I realize it was supposed to be funny that it was not only ignoring the life forms, but deliberately getting them out of the way of its picking up rocks. They could have dealt with that some other way, however, like having it throw it farther away.

First of all, astronauts are generally well educated, and yet Dwayne Johnson’s character doesn’t even know the definition of "alien". He IS the alien, seeing as he’s not native to their planet.

Second, the chances of a civilization that far away from us (who have not been surveying us) that speaks english are zero to none.

Third, UFO and Flying Saucer are not interchangeable terms. It pretty much has to be saucer shaped in order to be a flying saucer, and what he travels in is not saucer shaped.

I could go on, but I think I’ll let you give your opinions first.

Oh, and I don’t want to crap ALL over the movie, so I will say; the Alien Xenomorph puppy was pretty awesome.

Wow, I thought the debacle called princess and the Frog (Disney) was the worse animated film in quote awhile.

    WRONG!

This film was simply mind numbing, tard drooling, dirt puking awful.

    1. The animation is about equal to what a 7th grader can do with a $200 mac program. That’s not syaing it’s bad, but it is far from good.

    2. the story is simply bad, undeveloped, simplistic and VERY boring. These writers need to take lessons or maybe graduate screenwriting classes at their community college.

    3. Sony stinks at animated films. They have yet to have a hit.

    4. The most retarded thing in this film is when the "scientist" alien picks up a candy wrapper, (can you say paid product placement) is asked by all thoe around him if he knows what the strange characters say and makes up what the words say to make it sound like the "visitor" has evil intentions. Obviously the writers and directors did not think this through as all the signs in the town, all the comic books, their native language (which they even make mention of) are in english. Even the freekin little kids in the audience caught this one. And if you want to use the excuse that the barcode numbers were what they were referring to, these "aliens" also used the same numbers. Major screwup.

    5. The chick aliens wear dresses but the guy aliens are pantless.

    6. The animation looked half finished and everything about this film screams direct to DVD or made for the cartoon channel.

    7. Not worth the $1.50 for Budget Theater.

After watching the preview several times I noticed something interesting. The astronaut accidently steps on a "rubber duck" though i noticed that the "rubber duck" had THREE EYES!! that implies that the animal on that world most resembling an Earth duck has 3 eyes! That’s such a clever subtle way to show how alien the world is!

That astronaut was stronger and more powerfully built than almost every one of those aliens which makes me suspect that planet 51 is smaller than Earth with less gravity. The fact that he could run with a big heavy bulky space suit on kind of adds to that theory. Usually in sci fi the aliens are physically intimidating to humans but in this that looked reversed, he looked like a he man on that planet.

I saw the movie today with my mom and it was good, but one thing that really disturb my mind was this; Chuck’s realtionship with Lem in the movie. Was he a homosexual? Because in the film, I kinda spot some hints that he may be or not. And in the first part where Lem and Chuck first met, when Lem told him his name, Chuck was like "Either your name is Lem or you’re trying to mate with me." It was….how do I put this? Well…that kinda caught me off guard during the first half of the movie, but then when it got further at the scene where Chuck tries to teach Lem how to woo Neera with his tips on how to get a girl, he ALMOST try to kiss him! I thought "WTF?! O_o" It was hilarious, but really disturbing to put in an animated feature to me.

I was kinda afraid for something like that to happen because last night I had a dream that Chuck and Lem were having….ahem! S-E-X! And that was a night before the movie came out one day ago. Don’t ask me why, but I had a feeling right after that near kissing part from the movie, I sense that people are gonna be shipping Chuck/Lem as a couple later on further if Planet 51 gets enough fanfics and fanarts of them together as a mis-match. I’m not a big fan of slash, but for some reason, I can see these two working out together in a homo sorta funny-bone tickling kind of way.

I couldn’t listen to another love song ever again without thinking of these two in a gay relationship and hearing Taylor Swift’s song You Belong With Me and Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love song has told my head enough nasty thoughts on them! XDD

Assuming the aliens think the same way humans do, the "hypnosis" thing where he tricks them into thinking he has control of their minds is actually VERY realistic. When people believe something strongly enough, this happens with religions it actually affects them in incredible ways, its a form of hypnosis. My father told me years ago that in some cultures if a hex is put on a person the person so much believes that they are going to die that in fact they DO die. A person who totally believes that they have been taken over with mind control in fact WILL be. That is part of how these crazy cults work.

At the beginning when Chuck’s ship lands, the sky is blue, the sun shining, a summers day on Planet 51, then the skys cloud over as his ship lands, after that the clouds clear and it’s clear blue sunny sky again.

Chuck runs away, is hounded by the dog, rushes into that house where the kid wont take his medicine.

When he rushes out of that house it’s night time and dark?

    Seemed alittle wierd.

I’m a very big movie fan and I’ve been watching movies ever since I was 7 years old, pretty much one movie a day if time allows me to. I would also like to become an actor.

I like to review the movies I’ve seen and have done so on my blog, where you can find reviews, thoughts on acting and other fun stuff.

Now don’t p!ss your pants and hack on me, I’m not saying you HAVE TO read it, just saying it’s out there if any movie fans are interested and have as big of a passion as I do.

    Take Care and thanks!

Ok this is probably comming out of left field here. With all the nods and refrences to other movies had me thinking about a nod to the world’s robotic space missions and a criticism of it. When Chuck scolds Rover for sending back pictures of rocks only with all the life on the planet, kinda had me wondering where the filmakers in a roundabout way saying "if all your gonna do is send out probes designed to look at and analyze rocks, that is all your gonna see" or do you think they probably wern’t thinking that far ahead?

I was going to leave this space blank but then I decided to rent it out.
