Okay, so I’m willing to give dance movies a chance. I mean they can be kind of fun even though it’s not my scene. But give me a break (and not as in breakdance). The lead, this DJ character is, what’s the word … whacked.

This dude is ultra cool and wears a diaper on his head, a cap on the diaper and a hoodie on the hat! C’mon! This is Georgia?! One moment he’s dressed for snow and the next he’s not wearing a shirt.

Also, a note to the ending … are all the other members of theta gay? How come he’s the only shlub to have his girl run up on stage while the other dudes are more into hugging each other?

Last, these guys spend 4 weeks and learn at least 5 routines or more down to perfection, while attending school, while working jobs? I’m impressed.

AND check out DJ’s girlfriend. Breaks up with her X at dinner, spends the night out sulking, shows up at his doorstep and is apparently all ready for a new ride. The word slut really pops to mind when I think of her.

I know it’s Georgia, but how about a better x-section of the demographics. It just ads a bit of credibility to a story line. We are a mixed racial society here people, don’t you think producers and directors need to start taking that fact into account?

As to the movies technical aspects. For the most part I thought it was okay, but why if the dance moves are so good do we get such crappy photography? Hand helds and jerky in/out shots with WAY too many slow motions and up angles.

To the quality of the actors. I felt the script was so bad that they didn’t have any material to really portray what talents they may have had.

Guess that’s my rant. Flame away if you loved it, but before you do, explain the silly diaper and why ANYONE would wear it … and then wear a baseball cap on top of it?

Anyone know what kind of jacket she’s wearing and what says on it?

It’s the dark red one closer to the beginning when he tries to talk to her and her bf comes up.

For those that say they want to see real stepping I suggest Step Off on MTV. Since they have decided not to EVER play actual music videos anymore they are trying to branch out into other stuff. But this shows actual steppers and actual Historically black fraternities and sororities practicing for a big step show. So this is more of what it is really like.

Jus’ wonderin’ if anyone noticed that there is not a single white face shown throughout the whole duration of this movie!?

Actually once, near the end, at the final competition u see, for a split second, white blokes and a blonde girl in the line of judges….but however later on when u see the panel of judges again they’ve mysteriously vanished!?!

Odd but interesting…tho i’ve got nothing espcially against it, this is the blackest movie i’ve ever seen…Spike Lee would be so proud!!

    peace.

…There would be outcry from everyone who wasnt white screaming "racism racism" from the rooftops! but its alright to have an all black collage??? if there were schools for "whites only" we would never hear the end of it.

so this brother disrespecked another guy and then they both holla’d and then threw down at the local hip hop club and then one guy got the others girl coz he wasnt respeckin her. then the guy managed to overcome his previous life in the ghetto whilst using the skills he had picked on the street to his advantage, gaining the respect of disapproving relatives in the process.

what a *beep* and unimaginative film. suppose it had some comedy value and the occasional nice moment in the soundtrack. this isnt meant to be a racist comment, if anything the film is racist in its representation of black people.

How did he end up getting arrested over his brother getting shot?

How messed up is the system that they would arrest the brother of the victim who was also a victim himself of the sneak attack by the group they battled earlier?

    I Love This Movie.

Truly Impressive Writing, Directing and Performances

Too many seem to have missed too much of the deeper insightfulness of this movie based on the IMDb rating.

Not the only one, but for me the biggest (universal) message of this movie is:

The Universe taught DJ an extremely painful lesson about his self-centeredness by taking away from him his brother (his best friend). When he understood to care about the needs of others and to put their needs before his own, the Universe rewarded him by giving him thousands of brothers (fraternity brothers).

I just wanted to write a quick message and back up the people who say this movie’s IMDB rating is undeservedly low. I saw this movie completely by accident, because it came on after another movie I was watching on cable. I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting anything, but I thought it was really good. It’s not one of the greatest films ever made, but if you go into the movie and don’t expect it to be perfect, I think you’ll have a good time. I thought everyone in the cast did a good job, and the editing during the stepping sequences was amazing. They really did a fantastic job with that.

I’m sure there are people who disagree with me, I’m just saying give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised, and you might be too

I once read a passage that said any situation can be disastrous if approached from the wrong angle and that if you don’t bend under pressure you’ll break under it. In so many movies involving a youth in conflict with others, a lot of times you’ve got a meek, likable character that starts out as a victim, then ends up (usually through a montage) gaining strength to overcome his obstacles.

Columbus Short’s character was played more like a gruff action hero. He was talented and strong, yet always at odds with everyone, even being rude in some instances, though I think it was always warranted somewhat. I much preferred Brian White’s character.

I still think we live in a world that equates kindness with weakness, and that’s why for any character to be portrayed as strong, they have to act like an a$$hole.

Jackie Chan’s roles are a great example (for lack of a better one) of heroes that are pretty charming and nice yet still incredibly strong and able. Most leading men nowadays play it all mean and surly to be taken seriously, what do you guys think?

The one I’m looking for is played at the scene where the crowd totally freaks out making a great noise which makes it even harder to identify the tune. The beat is VERY slow and very straight and it might remind you a bit of Queen’s We Will Rock You.

It could be one of the countless J Squad tracks, but I’m pretty sure it’s neither the HOF Anthem nor the ttbz Anthem.

…but no more stupid than West Side Story with the Jets Vs Sharks and that’s considered a classic. So what do I know? You wouldn’t catch me anywhere near this mess, but it doesn’t bother me that other people like it. It seems like there were a few years between the 50s and the 2000s that dancing wasn’t very manly (no matter how angry you look doing it). Now it’s like everyone wants to…DANCE! It’s like the old Monty Python sketch with the son locked in the tower.

Does perpetually scowling make you bad ass?

This movie is so ludicrous it’s embarrassing.

Everybody in this movie, poses, sneers, scowls, flexes, tightens their jaw, shouts, purses lips…

Stop trying to be so bad ass. Maybe stomping is enjoyable to watch in real life, but this movie depicts STOPMING to be as intense as fighting in Iraq, saving sinking ships, fighting fires or stopping nuclear war.

A bunch of poseurs that made this movie. Trying to impress 12 year olds and bisexuals.

I have been stepping with my fraternity since 1999 and have been the step-master (person that choregraphs the shows) since 2000. Having said that, when I or anybody that I know watches this movie we usually skip through the stepping scenes. We will watch the dance sequences and the other parts of the movies. But as far as the actual stepping parts they are painful to watch. The movie doesnt stay true to what step shows are like AT ALL. I know the majority of people that have seen this or will see this dont step so this might look cool, but true step shows are much better then anything this movie had to offer.

Steppin’ is for pussies! Best line of the movie. I have to agree with DJ on that point even though he later started steppin’. The only good thing about this movie was the really smokin’ hott black chick that DJ hooks up with. The rest kind of blew.
