There’s no way the military would drop that thing into the arctic like that. They would be trying to turn it into a weapon. If they could find a way to neutralize it other than freezing it, the military would probably make guns which fired that stuff. Even if it just hits them in the leg, they’re dead. Then it spreads. You could probably take over an entire country within days of the first battle. Then neutralize it.

Is there any more annoying screen kid in the history of cinema? Every time this kid appears on screen, I’m routing for the Blob to get him.

"Whewere you going?" "I’m not afwaid, I’ll gawd you." Talk about a thick east-Pennsylvania accent!

Just responding to someone’s assignation of this movie as being horrible!! I think it is one of the best examples of the genre(and I’m not into sci fi a whole lot). It’s a great look at fifties America(in Technicolor)with some great locales(shot in eastern Pennsylvania). As a matter of fact–not that I’m telling film buffs out there anything new–the theater which gets engulfed by the creature of the title is still in existence as is the diner location(the high school, supermarket, the Doctor’s house. . .)It’s just a fun movie that pokes fun at itself and yet the ‘teenagers’ portrayed in the movie are pretty well drawn-out characters. It is definitely better than ANYTHING Ed Wood put out there as someone suggested!!! Who’s the blonde girlfriend??? That’s what I want to know!!!

The last line of the film Steve says "as long as the Artic stays cold" referring to the Blob staying there frozen….

    50 years later…the Artic is thawing…fast.

When I was at Montgomery Blair HS, Silver Spring, MD) in the late 50s, one of the English/Drama teachers was Travis Hillman who worked on the continuity for THE BLOB. She and her husband had staged WONDERFUL TOWN(60) and THE KING AND I(59). When I met her in college later I asked her if she had ever worked in films, besides industrial ones, and she said this was her only Hollywood credit.

Usually when people talk about famous Blair alumni, they mention Goldie Hawn, Connie Chung, Ben Stein and Carl Bernstein but Travis Hillman never seems to come to mind. Sylvester Stallone also went to Blair but didn’t graduate.

    Such wonderful writing…….

Sitting here tonight, watching it on TCM. Oh, joy beheld!

It’s been so long, I had forgotten the great script writing genius.

    example:

Claxon (and of course, add in the fire alarm to further confuse the issue), peals throughout the town, all people turn out to hear the news….

    next line is:

"the first thing we need to do is clear this area….you people all go back to your homes and stay there until you hear from us…."

    DUH!

That’s where they WERE til ya brought ’em out, dumbchyt!

(we’ll be generous here and not even bring up the ‘comic relief’ of the old man in his PJs wondering which helmet, CD or Fire Brigade, he should wear).

    ********

    another thing…..

where the heck did that supposed small town get all those people that came out of the theater? and seemingly, pretty much all the same age……must have been a pretty cold winter about 17-18 years earlier, eh?

    ********

    Oh yeah! One other thing:

Did Steve(n) McQueen EVER look young enough to have played this part?

    ********

I actually just saw this for the first time the other day. It was hilarious! Really amusing little B movie. I enjoyed it a ton.

However, the ’88 version is really the better movie. It’s not a masterpiece at all, it’s just a better horror movie. As a movie, it was better. It had a better story, acting, effects, etc.

Honestly I can’t even really compare the two. I know people generally hate remakes, but I don’t think it’s fair to hate the remake cause it’s not like this one. That’s actually kind of a horror movie. B movies are a thing all their own.

I don’t know who played the part of the Fire Chief but he sure looked like Bob Newhart. Brings a smile to my lips when the Chief comes on.

Actually, I think Mr. Newhart would have made up a good routine — ala’ his King Kong story — with this situation!

I can’t speak for anyone else who’s seen the movie, but as far as I’m concerned, that movie is 48 years old and to this day is still a classic. Also to date it’s still one of the most exciting movies I’ve ever seen. Let’s face it, you can tell it’s dated from certain things but just because something is "dated" doesn’t make it old or boring. And I’d say that one of the most exciting scenes to the movie is when they’re blowing the air raid siren and the fire alarm to wake up the whole town, I just love that, "sounds like New Year’s Eve". Is there anybody who agrees?

Has anyone else purchased Wes Shank’s book? I got my copy last week. It’s actually a pretty good read with lots of pictures, some of which I had never seen before.

Pretty good insight into the making of a low budget horror movie. Also cool at how they were creating the special effects after the movie was already filmed.

    I recommend the book highly.

What is the earliest mention of a blob like creature in science fiction literature? Edgar Rice Burroughs 1939 novel, Synthetic Men of Mars, has an all consuming blob that has the capabilities of spreading throughout an entire planet. In the book the creature is called, "the mass from vat room no. 4".
