Ok let’s assume that God and the bible were actually real for a second, seriously the King James version? This is the version that a single man decided that the bible wasn’t to his liking so he rewrote large portions of it; the current most theologically sound translation would most likely be the New International version where the oldest surviving manuscripts were found to get the most accurate translation of the bible currently available.. but of course in this movie "God" chooses a translation that completely muddled ‘his’ actual words

It just struck me as odd that a movie coming from such a religious stand point would make such an anti-Christian error.. I’m guessing the filmmakers don’t really know much about their "faith", but then who does?

but then again, i’m not so sure, lol – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PSVP9LuRhU

Only a kind and loving God could make something so amazingly spectacular. A perfect sunset. A hummingbird hanging suspended in flight. A flower with a million hues of color in one petal.

All of that I can believe were byproducts of an industrious natural order.

    But Mila?

No way something that perfect occurs without the blessed hand of the divine.

If you loved The Book of Eli film, what greatly admired pre and/or post apocalyptic themed action fiction books, comic/s, video game/s (with similar, or even more interesting themes and characters to those in the TBOE in your view), would you love seeing get film adapted.

Please elaborate on the story, what it’s about and why you greatly admire it. Anything mentioned doesn’t have to have any Biblical and/or religious theme/s in it, but it’s fine if it does.

Does anyone else feel that it is ironic that the Bible is the book that is supposed to save the world? Apparently it didn’t do much good pre-apocalypse. Also religion has caused wars throughout its existence so why reintroduce the concept?

I thought this was going to be a refreshing and entertaining dystopic sci action flick that Denzel was going to be playing in. What I found IMO was a film that wasn’t entertaining enough to be an action film, and not serious enough to be a drama.

In terms of the acting, I felts Denzel did well, but Oldman was hammy, the villain was very typical. Also, if Oldman can read and write himself why wait so long to find the Bible, why not just write his own damn book and proclaim himself a prophet. It did wonders for tons of people in history(Look how the Mormons & Scientologists thrive), and with no competition he really could’ve produced those five towns alot earlier if he wasn’t so lazy. I thought Solara wasn’t a well thought out character, and the interaction she had with Denzel was trivial and simplistic. So she comes to believe in a book she doesn’t know or understand in just the one night she first meets Eli? I also felt Kunis, while a decent actress and quite pretty, had a shrieking voice I couldn’t stand. It works for That 70’s show but not much else IMO.

In terms of directing, I liked the fighting choreography although I thought the single-shot action sequence wasn’t that great, although it’s a bit unfair perhaps to compare it to the inspired work Children of Men that was SO well done.

In terms of plot I’ve already addressed certain things, but I think one of the reasons the movie didn’t work as well was because there wasn’t enough emphasis on dialogue, background & motivation.

Maybe I’m just talking out of my ass. What did you think?

What was the "Christian" message? That religion can be used for both good and evil, and at the end of the day the good is worth protecting? Because really that’s the only semblance of a Christian message that can be found. People bitch about the film’s “overbearing Christianity” but that’s only because we as a society have become painfully oversensitive when it comes to religious ideas. The slightest mention is all of a sudden considered forcing religion on people. Eli wasn’t out there preaching the gospel. He was shooting people, listening to his iPod and eating cats. The closest thing that came to pushing Christian values was a short blurb in the car about doing unto others. It was written by a PC World editor, not James Dobson

    (spoilers)

The poor old & ugly woman who was being used and raped by groups of criminals/hijackers was left behind by mr. Eli, TWICE. However the lovely younger and more beautiful Solara was allowed to come along and be protected by him. Well, if he didn’t save Solara and bring her with him, she would have ended up like that other woman, being beaten up, raped and kept as prisoner in order to attract eventual victims. That poor other woman begged him twice to be saved, and she even tried to save Solara, but NOOOOOOOOOO she’s too ugly for Eli so he left her behind AGAIN, to be picked up by some eventual 3rd group of criminals and be bossed around and tortured. But the beautiful Solara, well that’s another story…

Anyways the movie was good overall, but this really made me roll my eyes…

Gary Whitta wrote The Book of Eli, and he intended for Eli to be blind and the plot twist at the end to say that God exists.

    It’s not up for interpretation.

So they went to a house of cannibals right? And they drank tea there. Since there are no materials outside, the tea would be made of blood, right? Which makes him and the girl cannibals too?

In the words of Blaise Pascal, "even though the existence of God cannot be determined through reason, a person should wager as though God exists, because living life accordingly has everything to gain, and nothing to lose."

So basically if you die and believe in God, everything works out.

If you die and don’t believe in God and he does exist, well that sucks for you.

I am just wondering, if humans ever went through an apocalypse, which book(s) would be the most important for the future generations to revive society, culture and technology ?

IMO, a college book on physics will be the most crucial book. No, I am neither atheist nor agnostic, but I just don’t see religious books worthy at all.

Its pretty clear to me that Eli was blind.. the way he said.. "I smell a highjack" "you wear a good perfume" yes yes.. all that makes sense..

and it makes sense he had really great senses others than being blind..

remember Gary Oldman opening the book.. and shouting "no.. HE CANT BE!"

anyways there are so many things that makes no sense to me then..

like how did he know the people in the house were cannibals.. he couldn’t see her shake, he couldn’t see the graves…

how did he even see that house from a far? him and the girl were talking about if anyone lived there..

and several times.. he looks directly at people.. looks them in the eyes..

its just.. I dont know.. I dont like this twist one bit.

    Avatar 6/10

As I watched the grand epic film, I couldn’t help but keep asking myself, "If Denzel was this much of a fly bad-ass all this time, why the beep did he wait so freakin long to show us???" What were all the Black-approved action roles going to Will Smith?? Seriously. Denzel could’ve had his people write something awesome and epic in action to do in all this time. I do wish they coulda made the movie PG-13 so it could’ve made even more money with a wider audience. Eh. Whatever. But it was good.

    *SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY*

I think The Book of Eli should have ended when he got shot in the stomach and we are to presume him dead. No plot elements/twists that were introduced after that moment should have been introduced, as they were absolutely cliche and even corny. I am very annoyed with the "uplifting" feel-good *beep* that permeates most films today. I honestly think, if they release a Director’s Cut, it should just cut off right there when he dies and fade out as Mila Kunis is dragged away by the "bad guys." That would actually raise my rating from a generous 5/10 to a 7/10. /rant

edit: and that 5/10 is based on the potential/entertainment value this movie had more than anything else. All in all, I’d recommend avoiding this unless you care for self-validating, masturbatory religious tripe.

I noticed that Denzel Washington (a very good man) is one of the producers of the movie. Cats are such amazing and beautiful animals. What’s with all that stupid anti-cat promotion in the movie???? They’re eating animals to survive… OK, that’s fine. I got that but Eli gives somes cat meat to the mouse I mean… Come on!!!! Denzel Washington doesn’t like cats??? So stupid people still need to promote domestic animal cruelty, the cat-hating scenes were completely useless. What’s the point of showing how much some people hate animals…

blind? Or was the Braile Bible was just a plot device so that Carnegie could not read it?

And as a P.S. What I liked about this film for the most part is that it told the relevance and power of the Bible without being preachy, but then Denzel can memorize ‘x’ number of bibles verses by the ‘word of god’. Just rang false in the context of the movie.
