The Holy Mountain (1973)

A Christlike figure wanders through bizarre, grotesque scenarios filled with religious and sacrilegious imagery. He meets a mystical guide who introduces him to seven wealthy and powerful individuals, each representing a planet in the solar system. These seven, along with the protagonist, the guide and the guide\’s assistant, divest themselves of their worldly goods and form a group of nine who will seek out the Holy Mountain, in order to displace the gods who live there and become immortal.

I would love to hear other’s recommendations for other films, especially older stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s.

    Thank you!

The MGMT video "Time To Pretend" uses imagery from this film…

Does anyone in the forum agree that a sub genre of this movie is Sci-Fi? I kinda figured that out after seeing the robot vagina, corpses with electronic implants and futuristic architecture.

And I had to turn it off. I almost puked. What a horrible, disgusting piece of trash.

apparently, there is a scene in this movie where a 10 year old strokes a little girl’s ”bare” (i don’t know what it means by bare) buttocks

    is this *beep* true

if it is, the director has problems

Okay, so the restoration is amazing, but one thing is bothering me – the coloring. I think the coloring is a bit off. The reds in particular look too pinkish. It’s not just my TV, either – it’s like that on my computer and another TV I own. What’s up with that?

Also, am I the only one having problems getting the DVDs (this and El Topo) to play? My main DVD player refuses to play them, but they worked fine in my other ones.

I was fighting with my friend as to whether or not this film would be considered avant-garde. I say it is, and he says that it clearly isn’t. Can you help us put this to rest?

I can’t think of any other filmmaker who has crammed more gaudiness or trashiness into one film. If the director is trying to make a comment on consumerism, sexuality, religion, etc. in our culture, why do it so heavy-handedly? Most of the people who watch this already know how ridiculous our society has become and that it could get worse. Why would Jodorowsky want to shove our faces in feces, blood, piss, and vomit 100 times? Alright, so his head might have been doused in acid while this was being made, but for people to call it a thought-provoking, avant-garde masterpiece???!! There’s nothing masterly about it…everything seems overly contrived, and unfocused….even the acting is terrible.

In both films the main character, a thief, climbs a tower and enters it from the top to find some sort of a wizard inside. Both sequences are very similar in content and in style.

    Anyone else thought this?
