This was my favorite movie as a child and is still mesmerizing at 27. Animated movies are rarely this good these days, even Disney movies. They go for the entertainment value and the laughs. The death of Little foot’s mother and the conversation with Sooter dwarfs the death scene in the Lion King (another movie I love). There is no heart in most animated movies nowadays and as such they will not hold a special place in the hearts of today’s youth. They will most likely remember them but find no reason to revisit them.

When I saw stone of cold fire previewed it looked like the big asteroid was finally coming to wipe out the dinosaurs when it crashed into the gulf. Didn’t anyone else rationalize this?

    *sigh*

that really sucks! I was reading about large sections of the film being removed (and lost!) due to its deeply disturbing imagery and atmosphere (at least for children)… One would think that the raw material would be retained/stored – especially for an animated feature consisting of thousands and thousands and thousands of individually hand-rendered images. I would love to see the "uncut" version of the film. It must be floating around somewhere, locked up in Don Bluth’s private vault

the following text is copy/pasted from Wikipedia:

Throughout production, The Land Before Time went under a severe cutting and editing of footage. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas thought that some scenes in the movie would appear too frightening or could even cause psychological damage to young children. Around 10 minutes of footage, a total of 19 fully animated scenes, were cut from the final film. Much of the cut footage consisted of the Tyrannosaurus rex attack sequence and sequences of the five young dinosaurs in severe situations of peril and stress. Though Don Bluth was unhappy with the cuts, and fought for all the footage, he had to settle on a final running time of 69 minutes, one of his shortest.[4]

Another part of the movie that was going to be eliminated was the death of Littlefoot’s mother. However, it was thought that if the scene were removed it would simply produce problems in explaining why Littlefoot had to journey to the Great Valley alone. In the end, psychologists were shown the scene and gave feedback to the production team. The character of Rooter was added to the story to soften the emotional blow, and teach Littlefoot and the audience that even after loved ones die, they are always with us in the lesson we have learned from them.[4]

In some scenes, the characters screams were revoiced with milder exclamations.[4]

I’m especially intrigued by the first paragraph. The missing ten minutes would surely round out the picture, making it even more poignant. As is, it’s my all-time favorite animated feature film. I love it. Now if only the film would be released in its entirety…

small male child loses a parent, begins a journey, has a female companion. old dinosaur mentions the "circle of life." Later, they meet friends. continues on, male sees a cloud in the sky shaped like a parent, then we get a happy ending.

Towards the end of the film Littlefoot has (The) Sharptooth killed, what where his motives?

Sharptooth had attacked the five on various occasions and during the journey he was a threat to them all. He was also involved in the death of Littlefoot’s mother.

The five where almost at the Great Valley, which protects Dinosaurs from dinosaurs like Sharptooth, so soon he would no longer be of any threat to them, plus I don’t think he even knew they where near by in that scene. Until Ducky was sent to be "bait", he wasn’t even after them at that point (I know he was during the rest of the film).

I personally think Littlefoot’s motives here where purley revenge based – because of his mother. What do you all think of this?

I grew up on this film and it remains one of my all time favorite kids movie next to Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fox and The Hound, and Aladdin.

I still cry when Littlefoot’s mother dies, and I’m 20.

Don’t worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I’m not going to end this 17 times.

Okay maybe this is very silly but I just found this old pic of me and my friend, taken while we visited Universal Studios in 2000. I have always LOVED this movie and even though we were 19 at the time I just HAD to have my picture taken with them :D (I’m the one on the right btw ^^)

All of his work just looks so real. I know he didn’t design the original poster, but even that looks real. An American Tail was great in terms of the way New York was portrayed as was New Orleans in All Dogs go to Heaven but I’m afraid nothing will ever top the Great Valley and the vivid landscapes of TLBT. Disney films used to look great and have some meaningful stories. They certainly don’t now, but even then, it didn’t come close to the look Bluth films had. The style just had more impact as a child than Disney. I’m 22 now and still marvel at its supremacy. Story wise it is no contest. Bluth films were edgier but, at the same time, more tender. Does anyone else agree?

Instead, I believe it is about the search for a better life when just about everything you loved had been taken from you. You know, about the power of will… or something. The Land Before Time is also a good coming-of-age story, one of the best maybe. A group of small dinosaurs (just imagine they are children) are trying to make things like they remember from their parents. It is like "don’t think your parents will always keep the world stable and safe for you". The main characters go to Great Valley to find there the world they loved and remembered.

In my opinion, the movie is NOT about different races learning how to live together. That’s bull****. Americans are just way too concentrated on the race issue (while being racist every day)

Everytime I hear the music, I tear up. I remember watching it when I was 6 (now 24) and everytime I hear the sharptooth music or great migration, I start to get going!!! :(

does anyone else feel this way?

I honestly can’t believe I didn’t see this before, but you know how all the dinosaur "families" are seperated from each other right? So the children have to go to the Great Vally on their own?

Well what was seperating them all was basically a massive drop in the ground – couldn’t the "Flyers" just fly over this and meet up again? I know that not all of them can fly yet, but those ones could just get the ones who can to help them across.

I love this film and HATE to find flaws in films I love so much, but I had to point this out. Thoughts?

There’s supposedly a wall there that stops the big carnivores from invading, but that begs the question of how the big herbivores got through (such as Littlefoot’s grandparents).

What number are they up to now?? The Land Before Time 13?? Seriously? It’s not even the same voice actors and the animation is different.

The first six movies were great, they should have stopped there. But they just kept milking it…a shame really.

But to the people that have watched all 13, does Littlefoot run into Allie (the long neck from LBT 4) again?

If the Great Valley is supposed to be Heaven and the entire movie is the gangs journey into purgatory and Heaven with the guidance of Littlefoot’s mothers prayers, then how come at the end, Littefoot’s mother isn’t there? She said she’s never seen the Great Valley.

Also, where are Spike’s parents? They weren’t at the Great Valley at the end. Neither was Littlefoot’s father. Where was he?

And, if they’re all supposed to be dead, how did they all die? It never showed them dying.

I love this movie, I’m just wondering because I never thought anything about the Great Valley being Heaven until just last night when I watched it again and came on here to read about it.

    Ok, hear me out.

This movie is all about disabled children. Look at the characters:

    1) Littlefoot has some kind of physical impairment, you can see it when he doesn’t look like his bros and sisters.

    2) Ducky has OCD. She repeats her nos and yeahs constantly.

    3) Spike obviously has a severe disability. Most likely Downs Level 6.

    4) Petre has ADD and suffers from mild psychosis…obvious when looking at his frantic actions.

    5) Now Sarah/Cera is weird. She may have split personality or is actually normal existing among the disabled. edit: whoa, Sarah/Cera…split right there!

Ok, so this movie seems to be about the disabled youth of America making to their own "great valley." But of course, they’re faced with lots of obstacles. Numbero uno is Sharptooth. He represents society as a whole: wild, corrupt and dangerous. But in a way, he’s also disabled. This is what leads to his ("society") death…this is a nod to WWIII which is happening RIGHT NOW!

I remember reading one time that the reason Land Before Time wasn’t as big as Lion King was because it was looked at as too violent and tragic for children. But in my opinion, Lion King was ten times worse. I guess that means children of the 90s were more strong minded than children of the 80s. Makes me kind of proud to be a 90s child.
