While I am no atheist, I am a definite modernist–keep creationism out of biol class, etc. I also have a degree in anthro, so I am supposed to be open-minded about pre-modern cultures. Yet somehow, I found Howie to be somewhere between 100 and 100 percent right. These heathens are, after all, killers. No modern state can tolerate such behavior in the name of "diversity." Any historian will tell you that it was Christianity, not pagan rational philosophy, that ended slavery and gladiatorial games. This is an historical fact. To be open-minded about the polytheistic pricks in this film is to be open-minded about the statutory rape at Waco.

Edward Woodward died November 16th 2009. Not really Pagan content but sad news

nevertheless. Many Pagan’s favorite movie would not have been possible without

him. His Sgt. Howie undoubtedly stood in for many real Christians who, as they

    say in Texas, needed killing.

    Farewell Mr. Woodward.

    (spoilers)

…at the end I mean, when the crowd are sort of dragging/pulling Edward Woodward towards the Wicker Man etc.

If someone was blatantly going to burn me alive, I’d be kicking and screaming for all I was worth. I don’t care if my hands were tied, even if the worst I did was kick the fat bloke carrying me in the nuts it would have been better than just allowing yourself to be carried like a sack of spuds.

I guess it had something to do with the Christian way of ‘turning the other cheek’?

Had he not stayed of his own free will and had he visited the landlords daughter, who would have been sacrificed in his place? Rowan? Would it have been the landlord himself, as the citizens of this island continually made reference to the fact that the sargent in his stolen costume was a fool, was playing the fool.

More a mystery/drama or even a sociological film. But it isn’t a horror film, that would be a misnoumer for this movie. It is not scary or atleast we can all agree that it is not scary in the sense of true horror films like the Omen, Exorcist, Se7en, ect.

    Okay,

So the potency of Howie as a sacrifice was partly due to the fact that he was a virgin. And the islanders planned to ensnare him and sacrifice him right from the beginning.

If this is the case, why did Willow go to such lengths to try and get into his pants on the first night in the Inn.

Surely, if she had succeeded it would have made him an inferior sacrifice?

I had always heard about Edwood Woodward’s acting performace in this film, but had never seen it. However, this evening I had the privelage of viewing it for the first time and I am blown away. That last scene of him struggling and yelling was amazing. R.I.P. Edward.

Does anyone know who sings the opening music in the film, which I believe is called ‘The Highland Widow’s Lament’. Its a wonderful piece of music- there is such an authentic and haunting tone in the singer’s voice, she sounds as though she really has roamed the hills of Scotland in poverty. Its such a shame that on the film’s soundtrack, that song is taken straight from the movie (you can hear the sound of Howie’s plane as well as birds)

I’m not sure whether original Wicker Man fans will have seen the gorefest movie Hostel but there is a scene in that movie where young men (about to meet their doom, but we don’t know that) are seduced by locals and the music they play behind it is the music for Willow’s seduction scene in Wicker Man. The music is well used and certainly gives another layer of meaning to Wicker Man fans.

Just saw the Wicker Man for the first time last night and although it was a great story and enjoyable in many ways – great acting, great atmosphere, iconic image of Ingrid Pitt looking amazing in the bath – I found myself a little turned off by the excessive folk music and campy singing.

Did anyone else feel that this detracted from things?
