A good movie over all but Paulette Goddard was badly mis-cast. She is supposed to be an English woman with not even a hint of an English accent. She gave by far the weakest performance of all the main characters. I think that Maureen O’Hara or Loretta Young would have been a much better match for this role.

These natives were supposed to be in Pennsylvania around 1763?…trading had been going on with whites for possibly 100 years by this time in this area. There is no way they would have been amazed by a compass. 1563 maybe…

Has anyone out there figured out which actress plays the exhausted mother, who staggers in carrying her dead child, and tells the defenders about the Indian massacre (of which evidently she was the only survivor)?

If I recall correctly, Neil H. Swanson re-wrote The Judas Tree to correspond to the script of the film Unconquered. So therefore, the book is called Unconquered. I cannot recall where or when I got this information, but it’s stuck with me for years. As for Goddard being all wrong for the part, yes, that’s true, as in the novel, the character is a very young girl while Goddard was far from it. However, just watch the film for what it does. It’s a typical DeMille epic with a cast of his old friends and although the ending is very weak, it’s great fun. When it first played theatrically, I saw it five times in one week and I’ve seen it so many times since, I can recite the dialogue with the players on screen. I was and always have been a Henry Wilcoxon fan, so that’s why the attachment to this not really that good DeMille film.

Even as a young lad of 9 when I saw this film in the theater I wondered why a British Colonel spoke with a French accent. As it happens Bouquet was a historical character, a French-speaking Swiss mercenary.

I’ve always loved this movie, even when I was old enough to cringe at "The only good Injun is a dead Injun" line. I had copied it off the Late Show, but was anxious to get a commercial copy of the videotape. Would you believe that the tape I bought off eBay has Paulette Goddard in a BLUE gown! The emerald green gown was indelibly etched in my memory and I hate that restorers were so careless. I know that this is no big deal to most people, but figured that anyone interested in looking at a chatboard for this movie would be a big enough fan to commiserate with me!

Ta’d think that if they were going to go to the trouble to show the Black Watch, they’d at least get the tartan right. Best i could tell they were marching in almost a dress Stewart.

I wish this was available on DVD, I have not heard any plans to release it yet.
