I loved this movie & I am glad they finally made a realistic movie about climbing. Perhaps more people will get into the sport after seeing a movie like this. It is a great sport that provides great exercise & this movie really shows what the sport is all about.

could someone ID the model or type (a comparable model) of sunglasses the Chris O’Donnell character was wearing while on K2… not the googles, the black polarized sunglasses. Thanks

Why not just put the backpack nitro side down into the snow? I guess this pretty miniscule compared to the rest of pure stupidity in this movie, but come one. Why would you put a little bit of snow on top of the backpack, instead of just putting the nitro side down.

I have been going to the movies probably on and off for over 10 years and after the horrible reviews and the dim box office numbers it seemed like the movie was removed from theatres in less then 2 weeks . So this had me wondering can anyone else thing of a movie that disapeared faster out of theatres then vertical limit? I can’t even think of one can anyone else?

    Hi!

I reminded of Drop Zone, with Wesley Snipes, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109676/ which is a quite hokey but fun look at the world of skydiving, set in a crime mystery. I’m sure that skydiving fans think it’s unrealistic but good old plain fun.

I’m curious if real climbers think this movie is bad good — a good popcorn flick — or just bad bad, so many unreal situations that it just cannot be appreciated even by an enthusiast.

    Thanks

    -Jon

When i saw this movie i couldnt believe the producers didnt do research before making this film. i wont even talk bout the impossible situations the climbers face themselves with, ill stick to the background of this film.

Firstly K2 isnt in pakistan, its officialy indian territory.so to call k2 in pakistan is plain wrong. The pakistanis have illegally occupied it.

Second: The pakistani’s wouldnt allow american millionaire’s to come and climb K2 because of some airline launch. See k2 is in pakistani occupied kashmir which is Restricted to non pakistanis.having hundreds of foreigners in k2 is even more unlikely.

Third: As of early 1990’s the pakistani’s ceded 3 sides of k2 to china, so american millionaire’s coming to climb mount k2 is even more unlikely.

Fourth: K2 isnt next to the L.O.C so showing bombardment by pakistani forces is wrong.

Fifth: After watching the movie i asked myself y did chris o donnel and his "passe" go to rescue his sister, shouldnt the pakistani authorities have done it??? well i did some research and found that almost all rescue missions in the himalaya’s r carried out by the respective armies of pakistan, india and nepal.

sixth: The pakistanis do not use liquid explosive in the army.

These r all the flaws that come to mind, if i watch the movie again im sure ill mind some more.

right b4 the nitro explodes killing those 2 climbers, the chick with the broken fingers takes out some rolling papers…wtf is going on there, she rolling a doob at 25 thousand feet?

I mean, come on, how many times did they get into that problem with everyone connected to the same rope (ie: the rope breaks, they all fall)…

And also, while im at it… those tanks of explosives…. one single tank can blow up an entire side of a mountain yet 200 tanks cant blow up half of a house???? BS.

After they pulled Annie out of the crevasse, how did they get back down the mountain to the point of being carried by chopper? Could Annie have survived that long without extensive medical attention and with just minor medical attention?

What I love most about this movie is it really shows what real mountain climbing is like…none of that Hollywood fluff. This is the real deal and what the professionals go through every time they’re on the mountain. The only thing that was slightly off was when Chris O’Donnell made the jump with the pick axes. Real mountain climbers always use a jet pack when they have to make a jump like that. But I understand the motive for not having a jet pack here…it would be too heavy to carry on a rapid rescue mission and plus it looks cooler jumping with sheer strength. A+ and three thumbs up. The third is for Tunney.

If the Nitro is so unstable that sunlight can set it off, how come they could fall heavily with it in their backpack or throw it around so blatantly and yet it never goes off?

i saw this many years ago on DVD at my friends house for the first time who had a BIG 60"+ rear projection tv. it was awesomeeeeeee.

will be watching it again just for the thrills

I laugh at those who actually rate this movie low because it doesn’t have a "good story" as if behind EVERY film must lie a good story for it to be regarded a good film. This said, I thought the story was sufficient and boded well for such a film.

    8/10 from me

    cheers

    PS:

has hollywood come out with any movies (newer than this, same genre ~ mountain climbing) that come close to this in terms of action / drama???

There is a scene where the weather was calm. they are arguing about going further up on the mountain, and Bill Paxton is eating some sorta candy bar. Well if you look closely toward the end of that scene, Bill Paxton takes a bite of his candy bar and in his mouth was a piece of the candy wrapper. haha

Montgomery Wick and Chris o’ Donnell’s character find that woman buried in the snow. I know it was supposed to be a sad moment as Mongomery found his wife after all those years but when he kissed her, I got this image in my head of his lips getting stuck to her, similar to when you lick an ice-cube with your wet tongue and it gets stuck…

Did anyone else experience this image?

I thought it was really stupid too for them to risk 6 peoples lives to save 3 but then I remembered watching Black Hawk Down in which Rangers(I believe) actually always go back into war zones to bring out dead bodies! I mean guys who are already dead so I mean it’s not really about what might happen it’s about the rules you’ve built your life on I guess or your morals and what you can or can’t live with. The brother couldn’t live w/out trying to save the sister and the climbers really didn’t have to go.

PS-I know this movie is laughable but I just thought of this.

I was recently going through my movie collection and looking at all the classics I owned. I came acrossed Vertical Limit, which is a remarkable cinematic achievment, if not one of the best movies ever made. I came on imdb to see what this movie was ranked in the top 250. Expecting to see this movie ranked around the 10-15 area, I was shocked to see this movie got such a low score. It is bad enough that O’Donnell didn’t win an academy award for best Male Actor. This film should have also atleast been nominated for best picture.

I mean I am an avid movie-goer and there are only a few movies that even come close to Vertical Limit. Just to name a few of these, The Last Action Hero, Taxi, and of course I can’t leave out the Land Before Time! I just wanted to know why so many do not appreciate this fine film. Maybe its because most people don’t see the Nazi Germany undertones and symbolism. Heck maybe this movie is just way to cerebral for the average movie watcher. Im sure as time goes on everyone will start to appreciate this masterpiece.

Why exactly did he kill the Nicholas Lea guy?

And he (Bill Paxton) was a jerk. Sticking to the schedule. Then when they got 4 more Dex syringes he’s still giving dirty looks.

I might be wrong about something too. Like the Dex. Suppose it could be a drug that once taken, you need another medicine to ween off it.

I just watched the movie last night in Chengdu, China on CCTV6. It was not dubbed, ie they spoke English. However, I still didn’t understand the part about Montgomery Wick. I take it that his wife was somehow killed by Elliot Vaughn. It that is true, what were the circumstances that led her to be frozen on the mountain? Also, I don’t know how I missed this part, but how did Montgomery die?

I’m still amused to this day that the guy who said "Strap on the nitro" never actually got to strap on the nitro. Oh well, I saw this movie for the sole reason that I had a crush on Nicholas Lea (Tom McLaren), and I must say I was disappointed with the lack of Nick. It was nice to see Bashir doing something after Star Trek: Deep Space 9, though. Hehe… strap on the nitro… stupid ass quote…
