Yeopgijeogin geunyeo (2001)

Based on a series of true stories posted by Ho-sik Kim on the Internet describing his relationship with his girlfriend. These were later transformed into a best-selling book and the movie follows the book closely. It describes the meeting of Kyun-woo (Cha) and an unnamed girl. Kyun-woo is shamed into assisting the girl because the other passengers mistakenly think she is his girlfriend. Once he helps her, Kyun-woo develops a deep sense of responsibility for her which enables him to tolerate (somehow) the girls abuses.

Assuming the girl is still alive and still in Korea, what would she think about the film? Would they be together?

From the Wikipedia page for this movie

"During the scene where Gyeon-Woo exchanges shoes with the Girl, the EDKO release again has a Korean track while the Starmax distribution has replaced it with the song "My Girl" by The Temptations."

Does anyone know the name of this korean song.Any place I can find it ?

    Thanks.

I didn’t watched it yet. It has a very high rating. But is this really a good movie or like a silly movie like ‘dumb and dumber’, ‘a guy thing’ and ‘anger management’. Does this movie really deserve to have a rating of 8.2?

Why did the girl brak up with the guy for 2 years without telling any reasons? and how did the guy accept it without asking any questions? moreover, what was it tht the girl’s parents hated the guy so much?

This may be wishful thinking but does anyone know if this movie will come out in blu-ray in the US? I know it’s a Korean romantic comedy and it’s not too popular around here, but this is by far one of my favorite movies and I would love to have it in higher quality.

    Any info on this?

When I was translating the latest chapters (23 & 24), I needed to go back to my own translation to confirm consistensies within the postings… and took about 10 minutes to find the chapters I needed. I thought it was a little inconvenient… so I’m going to repost it here.

Because I have a very inflated but nevertheless insecure ego ;-), I’m not going to ask anyone to stop posting comments. But just remember not to reply to this particular post (but reply to each chapter posts instead)… hopefully that way, comments and translations won’t get jumbled up.

On my R3 Korean release, there seems to be a flaw with the English subtitles; basically every time a character speaks, first their name appears on the subtitles followed by a colon, then what they are actually saying. This can be quite distracting as you tend to read the start of the subtitle first – obviously – and then you end up losing what is actually being said.

When two characters are talking to each other, this can get particularly irritating, as the character name appears each time they exchange speech. Not only that but every time someone opens or closes a door, or a background noise is heard, this appears on the subtitle too. How ridiculous is that.

Does anybody else have this problem? If not, I’m guessing its a problem with my own disc. *Its the EnterOne (Shin Cine 20th Anniversary) 2-Disc re-release of the film from 2008*

    Cheers

Hi, I live in the United States and I really want to see this film, but it is not available on Netflix, and there are several versions on Amazon.com, but I am not sure if any of them are good, or what the differences are. If someone could elaborate on what the best DVD version is, and how I can get it (I have a region-free DVD player, so region-encoding isn’t an issue for me, although I’d prefer Region 1 or No Region).

    Thanks!

In the beginning of the movie, we learn that Gyeon-woo’s Aunt lost her son a year ago. But then he meets the Girl on the subway that same night when she is drunk. She later reveals the following day that she broke up with her boyfriend a day ago (a lie obviously). Can someone just clarify if she was a drunk for pretty much a whole year until she met Gyeon woo and clear up the timeline? She’s obviously still depressed about the previous boyfriend throughout the whole movie until the end.

And also, the scene when Gyeon woo is talking to his buddies in the restaurant and he sees the Girl. Does he know it’s her so hes running to hit on her, or was that just his mistake and he wanted to find another girlfriend? His dialogue indicates that it was his mistake but I don’t know why he would go hit on a random girl. I just figured he was just getting pretty drunk but he was walking fine haha.

And why did the Girl not go pick him up when he called her after he was drunk? She was probably mad at him for the earlier prank but how did she know he got sent to jail?

Movies like this always bring nostalgic feelings of my time spent in Korea and I believe it would be the same for any expat out there like me.

I left Korea pretty young but I went back there after college to re-learn the language I had long forgotten. And in that time I met a girl with whom I had a long relationship. I still remember the rides in the subway on my way to meet her, the way she used to hold my arm when we were walking in the busy streets and her cute shyness at any public display of affection from my "westernized" personality.

Our relationship wasn’t platonic (and I doubt any couple in Korea would have such a relationship as shown in this movie, especially now) but it had much of the same innocence shown in the movie. We also went to amusement parks, we also took trips to the country, we also spent long hours just sitting in the park and talking. And, funny thing, we once went to a club in which the target patrons were a little bit younger than us. We just didn’t have any high school uniforms to wear.

I don’t think I miss her (and it wouldn’t be fair to my wife and my baby girl if I longed for a long gone ex-girlfriend), but I miss some elements of that relationship. And I’m definitely nostalgic about the only serious relationship I had in Korea. The moments we spent together, especially the moments we spent in Korea, were magic.

I recently watched this movie and it disturbed me to say the least. The reason being I also went out with a girl that had some issues (although not nearly as erratic as the Girl in this movie). The actress in this movie is simply spectacular,on so many occasions her mannerisms and facial expressions reminded me exactly of my old girlfriend. My girlfriend also tried to cover up loneliness and pain with over the top behavior (although not nearly as bad) and was similarly demanding. This happened almost 5 years ago mind you, in college, but this movie brought back a flood of memories and I can relate to it. I’ve been thinking about my old girl ever since I watched this,…and I’m really trying not to,..but thats how good this movie is.

Ok, I have a question. Is it normal in Korea to be going out for 4+ months, calling yourselves girlfriend and boyfriend, and still not kiss once, let alone do anything else? What kind of definition of girlfriend/boyfriend is that? It’s no different from just being friends.

I find it very hard to believe that a guy would be willing to go through all that abuse from his girlfriend if she wouldn’t even let him kiss her.

It actually somewhat hurt the movie for me, it’s supposed to be romantic but it never really got there.

Another romantic movie without kissing is Kitano Takeshi’s A Scene at the Sea. But that’s such a minimalist movie, only a few scenes are shown – so it’s entirely possible that they did kiss when they were alone (since it’s often not usual to kiss in public in Japan). But in My Sassy Girl it’s apparent that they never did kiss.
